more progress on the coal dealer.....

this is the start of a chain-link fence using 1/2" hardware cloth. the wire diameter is a bit heavy, but i think when the scene is finished it won't be that apparent....

Very nice, the spacing and size of it looks pretty good for N.  What will you use for the chain link, that wedding veil fabric ?  It works out almost perfect for HO but looks fine in N I think.

the spacing is acceptable. it scales to 6'-8" between posts and 6'-8" high, whereas 10' & 8' would be better. i could make it higher of course by either cutting off or hiding the lower horizontal. the post spacing will have to do. the wire dia is 0.030 or so, i bit heavier than the 0.023 i used for the handrails. i will use wedding veil fabric, it's been in the scrap box for years. i think it will do just fine

Very nice work! I look forward to progress on your fence. Chain link is a bit of a PITA in N Scale and etched stuff is far too pricey!

Getting my money's worth on the hardware cloth. Whipped up a safety cage for the ladder...

Changed my mind on the chain-link fence.....the 1/2" hardware cloth didn't look right, the dia was too heavy. Went to the 1/4" hardware cloth but had to clip away 2/3 of the posts....I think this is acceptable...

Looks pretty damn good!
Any chance of placing something next to the fence to give an idea of scale?

After posting the photo, I noticed the fence mesh is way too big, it looks like 6" or more instead of 2" or so on a real fence. It looks ok by itself tho... On the other hand, the height looks right.

Yes it does, thanks!
I agree, the mesh looks big, but without scale it looked OK.
What I was looking for was the height and size of the posts!
You're right, it's just about the right size.
Years ago I took Nylons and stretched them across some cardboard, pinned it in place so it was stretched out, then I shot it with silver paint.  After the silver paint dried it kind of held it's stretched shape.  I then took a scissors and cutout strips and glued it to the posts.  Didn't look too bad.

I think the mesh is OK LI.  In n-scale we're always dealing with stuff that is a little out of scale.

BUT I will say I have both Gold Medal Models and BLMA's chain link fence and they've the cat's meow when it comes to recreating a prototypical chain link fence– very realistic.

I think they're worth the investment.

I agree the brass looks better and is easier. I've used it on this scence.

I may replace the home made fence someday.....

Love this scene!  Is the building scratch, kit-bashed or kit?
It's exactly what I've been needing for a spot on my layout.  Would you mind showing more photos of it?
