Frank, the waves definitely come and go. After four months of little train action (due to a temporary posting in Charleston) I have a list of projects longer then my arm (!) and the motivation to dive in and do them. So fear not, your doldrums shall pass.

Interesting read, Frank. Considering the number of trains and the penchant for modelers to compress time using a fast clock, what if you were to compress the number of trains as well, say 6:1?
Cheers!

Frank, one way I am going to deal with the Pennsy's volume is to go by a "trick". A trick is an employee's shift, and the Pennsy operated with three tricks, so 24 hours / 3 is 3 8 hours tricks. This idea was brought up by Jerry Britton in his "24 Hours at Harrisburg" study. Here is the link to it:
http://pennsyrr.com/operations/passenger-operations/94-operations/passenger/141-24-hours-at-harrisburg-overview
Good luck!

Tower operators and dispatchers worked 8 hours maybe? Perhaps someone knows. I know today its 8 hours. But back in the day railroad crews worked 16 hours. I wonder how that would work out for an operating session? Maybe the whole session is one shift?

You could always pretend that the proposed fourth track was built.
Or you could put an interlocking like the PRR did, but this may be messy at the bottom of a helix.
