I believe both locomotives have the same wiring harness/plug into their respective tenders, so swapping tenders should be do-able.

However, I don't think any of Bachmann's decoders would be re-usable in a light 4-8-2 as it would likely be too big to fit in the provided space in the locomotive chassis -

Roger,
As far as I remember, it should be a simple swap. Both tenders have the 6 wire harness in them. Unplug one tender, plug it into the other loco. No need to swap decoders as both loco's already have the same Bachmann decoder in them.

PS. Replying to your e-mail now Roger.

If I remember correctly, the connector on the tender is not in the same place, so you will have to lengthen the wiring to swap these.  I think I commented on this when the 2-10-2 first came out but I can't find it.

The tenders on my heavy 4-8-2 and 2-10-2 look pretty much the same to me on the inside -

I don't have a Vandy tender though, so that might be different.

The inside of a Vanderbilt....

The plug is a bit farther back but there is lots of slack in the wire. I don't see an issue with the plug reaching.

Roger,
Unplug the harness from the tender, plug it into the replacement tender.

Here is a shot of the long tender with screws to help show how it comes apart.
