Stucco, Spanish Tile & the Turlock Depot

I'm considering scratching the Tidewater Southern's Turlock depot on one of our Free-moN modules, and was curious what people suggest for creating the stucco texture on the walls.



The photo, with the walls in the shadows, doesn't really show it, but the stucco texture is pretty predominant.

For stucco: a thin layer of spackle over styrene? or balsa (for the spackle to adhere better to?)
A florescent light covering sheet painted white?

Also, and other options besides Plastructs Spanish Tile sheets?
In N those are small sheets and rather expensive.

I tried a technique for concrete that ended up being too heavy, but could be used for a light stucco.



It's acrylic paint applied by dabbing a makeup sponge.  You can adjust the coarseness a bit by how wet the paint is.

Over in our 1x2 Challenge Thread I report on a half etched brass sheet Spanish Tile from Micron Art. Probably not much cheaper then Plastruct, but considering the Plastruct stuff isn't in their product line any longer this mat be your best bet.

I've created some of my best stucco effects while not trying to. Often I find myself needing a coat of subtle texture on a plain, flat surface, and so I'll spread some Squadron white putty on the styrene substrate with a painter's palette knife. Invariably bits of dried putty get caught in the mix as I trowel the surface in a vain effort to make a smooth coat. The result is very often a rather decent stucco effect. I'm certain that if my intent at the outset was to make stucco, it would fail. So there's my tick: try your best to add a smooth layer of putty, and you just might wind up with great stucco.

I'll try to come up with some images--they escape me at the moment... naturally.

Roof tiles- IF you are not doing it to resell, then you could get the plastruct tile
and make a mold. i did this with latex (not RTV) . It takes some time to build up
a latex mold, but  it worked out okay and was worth the effort. But you could make
a mold with RTV and it would be better!

I plan to someday build depots similar to what you show, as that style was quite
common in California, being found on the WP, SP and Sante Fe.

I wonder why you would pick the Turlock one, and not something a little more classy?

Why not fudging the Spanish tile using overlapped corrugated sheet? Ngineering makes some that is .005" aluminum (http://www.ngineering.com/other_detail_stuff.htm - at the bottom of the page), so thin enough to overlap and holds up well enough in cutting.

Of course, you could go all out and cut the corrugation apart along the bends and then re lay it just like the Spanish tile.
