A Pennsylvania Consolidated (Key brass) moves into position to take on coal; behind it looms the main building of the sprawling abandoned Rearden Metal Works plant, circa 1999.

Photo by Lou Sassi, taken on the (now gone) White River and Northern IV.

Then there's this:

An unfinished Shay bash, based on a Minitrix FM chassis and an Arnold 0-6-0 switcher shell, lovingly referred to as the "Frankenshay," circa 1976.

Build article starts here: http://whiteriverandnorthern.net/clinic_16.htm

Incidentally, the Frankenshay was purchased by a modeler looking for oddball power for his logging layout; he says he's completing the construction and will forward images when done.

Well I finally broke down and joined, thanks superturbine for starting this thread and posting a couple of my pictures. There are some really wonderfull steam engines out there, thanks for sharing everyone. The 2-10-2 is looking good, when you get more of the detail on the engine you need to bring it of and we will take some pictures in Kingman Canyon. thanks, Gordon :D

Chris,
When I get old and curmudgeonly (!), I want to come and sit at your feet to learn the dark art of engine building in small scales!

--- Hand built, one off, Non-Korean, brass....... Right???  Very impressive!

Well, it is handbuild, one of, dutch and for a large part brass. But there are some plastic parts used (f.i. tender, cylinders etc.) and the chassis is completely custom build. It runs very well.

Thanks for the photo of Frankenshay : it really gives me an idea. I may ultimately have to turn my Atlas shay into a Frankenshay, as it is missing 1 of its u-joints, and Atlas apparently no longer has them as parts.

Also, whoever posted the Pennsy T1, that's not exactly a meager contribution. They were considered steam superpower, after all, and I'd love to have one, even though I'm not really a Pennsy fan, but I am a sharknose fan.

It sounded like a good idea at the time... too bad the caboose wasn't in on the plan.

What are the basis(s) for these locos, and where do you get some of the cast white-metal parts your using?
I especially like your B8a and H10sa. You should consider making molds of each loco's body (and tender if the tender is a modification/scratchbuilt) and casting them with Micro-Marks mold kit and casting them in their white resin stuff.
Either way, if you'd be willing, i'd love to have an H10sa made up (perhaps even a B8a seeing that its origins are that of the life-like 0-6-0).

Well Jason (superturbine), I finally made it here -------------------------  :D
Thanks for the invite.
Your right, i've never seen so many great steamers in one thread, lots of great builders here !
TONS of fantistic pics !
I recon i'll post my first pics of Jason and my resin cast UP FEF-3's.
Jason wanted the grey & silver Greyhound, I went with the grey & yellow #844.
The smoke deflectors are Athearns that I extended and widened. The tender is also Athearn.
After I painted both steamers they were sent back to Jason to have their Kato GS-4 chassies cut down and tenders attached.
Heres a few pics:

And heres mine after Jason sent it back and I airbrushed the steam chests.

OK Jason, lets see yours ----------------------------  8)

Thanks, Otto. I have been lurking in here for a while, checking out everybodys great work. I have always loved the 50's era and Cajon Pass and saw your layout in GMR. Jason(superturbine) and I flew out to LA for ATSF #3751 first trip to San Diego in 2008 and hit the pass and quite a few other places. Would love to see your layout in person one day. Now that I have signed up i need to see out to post some pics. Thanks, Gordon :D

Figured i'd post another from my steamer collection.
Heres a GHQ Northern Pacific Z8 Challenger rideing on a Rivarossi Challenger chassie.

As you can tell, I like my steamers shiny new in appearence, just hard for me to weather my own engines, just other peoples ---------------- lol
Lots more to come in plastic, pewter, cast resin and brass.

      Thanks guys !
With other steamers i've already seen on this thread, I really have to try hard !
Jason is for sure great when it comes to resin casting.
I'm waiting myself for a couple more FEF's from Jason to paint in Greyhound colors --------------- "HINT", Jason ----  ;)
Well heres the last steamer I will post tonight.
Its my GHQ Pewter Milwaukee Road F-7 Hiawatha Hudson.
It rides on a Con-Cor Rail Baron chassie.
As with my Z8 Challenger, it to has a lift out coal load as do all my brass steamers that came without.
This was a very fun kit to build and paint for me.
As for the side rods, all were removed, airbrushed silver, then on went my magnified eyeglasses and the smallest point paint brush I have and hand painted all their centers red.
As you can see in the pics, Con-Cor dosn't exactely do 100% color matching on some of their passenger cars, so I had to lightly do a fade away tender side color stripe. But it blends in well to the cars.

Thats it until later --------------------------  ;)
