Still slogging away at the intermodal yard. Got some more backdrop on, still need to "make it snow" on the south module and add the lights to the light poles but its taking shape:

Love the weathering on the well cars.  Outstanding!

I have a number of projects on the to-do list; not sure where this one racks and stacks.  I may yet consider a temporary solution, although I don't keep extra code 80 on hand.  The entire mess of code 80 needs to come out, but removing perfectly functional track is not a trivial prospect, and will take considerable time, cash, and supplies.  In the meantime, here's another picture where the rail joiners are less visible:

More progress on the BC Rail CRS-20s.   607 and 611 got their noses chopped.

Nice job!  I'm at about the same stage on my model of 601.  I hope you don't mind but I'm going to squeeze you for info!  I made my own front windows.  What did you use as a donor?   Do you have any actual measurements for the back end? It looks like you got your front air filter, your DB fans, and you windows from the same locos.  GP38s?  Which Alco did you use as a starting point?

Thanks a lot, Craig

Hi Craig.

You are  in luck... this whole CRS-20 conversion project is being documented in excrutiating detail on my blog.. (currently at part 4).   I cut the front window panel out of spare Kato SD40-2 cabs.  The rear radiator screens are actually a fine self adhesive nylon repair patch product I found at Michaels Arts and Crafts in the sewing section.  The twin fans on the top are cut from SD40-2 shells as are the radiators behind the cab on the left hand side.  I dont have precise measurements for the back end but i have been able to effectively eyeball this from numerous photographs I have collected.

This is a very challenging conversion but I am just taking it one step at a time.  Starting point is the Atlas (with Kato mechanism) RS-11 of which i found two in undec recently at a very good price.

I really like this pic...nice job...

I finished up a couple projects this week, first is this box lettered for a former co-workers fictitious line.....

Next is this factory painted D&H "grey ghost" that I changed into a MEC unit.......I removed the factory lettering from one side completly, the other side I left some to "show though".  I also removed the factory grabs and repainted those areas, then added new grabs and some MU hoses . I added some weathering as well.......
First here is a proto shot....

Great work everybody! I especially like Doug's Pennsy steamer. How well does it run with the tender-drive?

While I finished this model a while ago, I only just now took a picture of it. It is a farm silo from American Model Builders.  I'm not good at weathering so I should probably pass this model to  :tommann: for one of his "aging specials"  :D  I build this model for a farm on friend's D&H layout.

Andy:

Good progress on the CRS-20 conversions - a lot of the hard work is already behind you!

During this past week I started on the process of attaching feeder wires to the track sections for my main line.  The first section of track to receive my attention connects the bottom end of the helix to the Pine River bridge on the lower deck.  I am using 22 AWG solid wire for the feeders:

Because the benchwork is almost 20 inches deep at this point due to the bridge scene, I elected to run a branch off the bus wires to come up and collect the feeders for this section of track.  I am using 14 AWG stranded wire for the bus wires:

With the feeder wires attached and fed through the holes in the roadbed, the first section of track outside the helix is now wired and ready to be glued down tomorrow:

While trackwork and wiring are the main priorities for me this year, some MOW cars are moving towards completion.  These four cars were recently painted and are in the process of receiving decals:

I have one more week of holidays ahead of me, during which I hope to get several sections of track wired and glued down.

The tender drive is very smooth and an excellent puller.  The tender alone weighs 2.5 oz. with most of that weight over the front drive truck.  One of the drive axles has traction tires.

I'm not sure why manufacturers have not developed tender drive, but here is a link to another Starmans tender drive loco with a 120 car train:

Nice job Joe!!
Where did you get the blue decals to do the MEC change over? I've been trying to get  Jim
to shrink down the HO decals he has now for quite a while, with no luck.  :x

Sure, the code 80 should go away - but - you have an operational layout - it works, its getting published in GMR .. I would keep it for what it is .. some day when you finally settle down up here in our area and we build the "big one" .. then you can do all the things you need to make you happy. In the meantime - I would keep improving it - new buildings, etc .. they can always be used on the next one ..

I really like this kind of modeling project. Its been fun and informative following your progress.  The result is spot on.  Great job.  Looking forward to seeing a picture of it on the layout.

Thanks for the kind words, Daryl. Much appreciated! And I'll have that layout photo for you in just, oh, 3-4 years  :D
