The Aquarium car dosn't have window screens!!!

LOL.

Hmm... I was thinking
about the concept behind
the cars...

Two scientists create a teleportation ray, and they try it out on a cricket. They put the cricket on one of the two teleportation pads in the room, and they turn the ray on.
The cricket jumps across the room onto the other pad.
"It works! It works!"

Ummm... define "nearly identical"?

I did add "IIRC" and evidently it should have been IIRI (if I recall incorrectly).

I know they are on my short list of freight cars to do.

DKS, you have not begun to see how fine the screens CAN be done . . .   :D

FYI, reviving this one to let folks know I've finished my first pass in the superstructure of PE cackle car kit in both HO and N to prototype.    On advice from others, I've decide not to share my phototool, but will provide pics of the preproduction build up.  So it might still be a few months.  Was initially hoping to exhibit it at shows this summer, but we've had a bit of a family medical adventure with our son. (Things looking MUCH better now, thx!)

As previously announced on this board in another thread on a similar topic, my plan is release a few as RTR - extremely limited editions for fully paid reservations only - and releasing kits only for those that remain from preorders and then commissioned runs.  My focus now is to select best screening options as well as complete the decals set - I'll likely do 4 versions and have already selected two.  So holler if you've got a strong interest in a particular prototype.

By the way, also looking for input re preference on underframe.  As a rivet counter myself, I was to  PE it as well as others have.  But it's been suggested that without making too many visible from on high compromises, one might use the diecast metal underframes available from a major, which may considerably cut the price per kit  - as well may materially improve likelihood the end result is rail-worthy.  And even if those were both a wash, starting from a proven underframe could significantly reduce labor for both my RTR and your kit build ups.  Thoughts?

Cheers,
Jake

Do not know who made these kits but they are rather crude compared to today's outputs but rather cool also. Look at the mesh. The trucks are marked as Kadee.

Maybe only slightly off topic. I thought this would be the right thread for a song about the "Chicken Train".

I can't remember where I found it but I seem to recall a picture of one of these cars in front of the Western Pacific depot at Oakland, CA.

@carlso

Your image seem broken, but if in N scale, I bet it is an American N Brass, which you can read more about here: http://www.spookshow.net/freight/anbpoultry.html

That 70's version was missing many key details that made this car special, including its lack of bracing & coops, which my design includes.  Without giving too much away, I'm currently experimenting with ways to include poultry silhouettes and ... yes ... sound!  One main technical nit I've been working through is how to best compromise on the PE mesh; if holes too small we lose transparency, but too big and we get more production failures.

That is a tough one.  Maybe you'll get some ideas from the . . . chicken wire thread we had a while back.  :) Specifically, the comments which mention that compromises have to be made, and the excellent and well-researched post from Robert Gilmore.

Basically what I'm saying is that maybe you should consider using stainless steel mesh instead of etched mesh.  You might be able to get close to scale look.

I must have missed that announcement. What is your estimated or target price?

And do you have a picture of the prototype?  :)

@JMaurer1

I intentionally buried the lead on the announcement.  So consider it a soft roll / informal at best!

Here is the thread:
https://www.therailwire.net/forum/index.php?topic=37930.msg457960#msg457960

As for price, nothing yet.

For the original run of the kits, it will be by pre-order only and likely price to just re - Coop (pun intended) my direct cost to produce the kits.
I've no idea yet on the price yet for the RTR dressed, undec and the version with sound, but should once I get the first production run under my belt.

Fair enough?

Neat thread. Reading it I remembered a photo I had seen in the Canadian Museum of Science and Technology's website showing one of these cars on Prince Edward Island (I believe it's actually right here in Charlottetown). This link should open their photo page:
