Ahh but we have a custom rivet solution do we not? Coming from one who has modeled rivets in CAD, these can make the CAD model much larger in size and complexity than may be necessary. Maybe that is a reasonable tradeoff if the sandblasting helps to smooth out the stepping...
Rivets aren't the only issues. On the E44 there are cabinet doors, handles, hinges, and various other small details that would be at risk. To me, losing or damaging all that relief detail seems to defeat the purpose of getting the shell in the first place. Might as well scratch it if I'm going to replace all of that.
I got a message from Paul Burkitt, the guy who's doing these shells, about the pantographs. He pointed me to a UK company called Dapol that makes some that are plenty close enough for government work.http://www.dapol.co.uk/index.php?page=shop.product_details&flypage=shop.flypage&product_id=719&category_id=59&manufacturer_id=0&option=com_virtuemart&Itemid=59Here's a shot of the CAD drawings:http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/topic/27138-n-oo-gauge-pantographs/As a bonus for those that want to us live catenary, they appear to be functional.
Thanks Eric, the Dapol pantograph look like they will work for the E44 just wished they were a matching set instead of an assortment, the one Stone Faiveley pantograph will work for the E44 and the Metroliner. The Brecknell-Willis will not. Rich
Eh... Comets? Kawasakis? Where is the modern commuter love?
The problem in modeling a Phase II RDC car is that there were some great differences all over the car, not just on the ends. The radiator bulge was different just as the ends and the ends of the sides... which really requires a complete shell and not just some end parts.
I'm pleased to see IHP trying this out, although I wouldn't consider the Phase II RDC1 a 'niche' item (the CC&F MU cars, sure). Now, if someone were to offer Phase II ends for converting Kato RDCs... Have you tried these, Daniel? (and before anyone jumps in: yes, I'm aware that they have received mixed reviews but you could probably buy three of these for the same price as one offered in FUD through Shapeways)http://islandmodelworks.com/NComets.html
