I used to visit the loop at least once a week when I lived in Bakersfield.  I too miss it.
I started with nothing and still have most of it left.

In this vid you can finally see where the East Walong switch has been removed, and the former Walong main siding has been tied into the new track:

Fixed that for you.
  [EDIT: goofed that up.]

So is it now time to rename "Walong" as "Walonger"?    :D :ashat:

Hmm, looking at say 5:23 of the vid, is that not the former Walong main that is now connected to the new track?  It is the former Walong siding track that now connects to what used to be the single track main, ie the track that still goes thru Tunnel 10.

(What is not clear to me from the video is whether the new track is in service yet.)

My mistake, I misread what you wrote.  Yes, the former main is connected to the newly laid track.    Which does not appear to me to be in use yet.  (All trains went through tunnel 10 in the video).

From Internet hearsay, I'm gathering that the new track is supposed to be connected at Marcel in about 2-3 weeks, and then go into service after that.

Don't the railroads usually put a new track in some sort of limited/restricted service initially, for some period of time?

We may have a temporary speed restriction for the first few trains; but that usually does not last too long.

Always subject to change, but looks like the next Tehachapi cutover will be in about 2 weeks (week of Aug 22).

Great.  It looks like the track was ballasted about a week ago.

I wonder, how high did they build that ballast shoulder?

I am stll tempted by the idea of modernizing my track plan. But I don't have an aerial view, and the cut introduces a scenic difficulty.

Hmm. Doesn't look like they did the diluted white glue yet.

Sorry, but the pics that I would have are of proprietary UP software systems that confirm it and I need to maintain a source of income for model trains  :D
