Thanks, guys!

Eric, that brick sheet is not only pricey (not necessarily a deal breaker), but the bricks seem to be an odd shape (proportioned more like concrete block than brick).  Then there's that sixth course on end.  Hmm, maybe I'm over thinking it, but I'll keep your suggestion in mind and see if something else doesn't turn up.

Dave, I think these are the bricks you are looking for?

Rich,

I think you're right.  That's the "running bond" look I wanted.  The brick still seems off (too short or too tall), but this is the best I've seen in sheets large enough for my purposes.  Thanks.

DFF

EDIT: Once I receive the order, I'll let y'all know what the proportion of the brick is.  The picture I saw first is only a drawing, which may not be to scale.  Another picture showing how to finish the brick and mortar has a brick that is much better proportioned.

I think scale bricks might not be best. Have you seen an Atlas Middlesex Mfg kit? It looks like scale bricks and they seem way too small and impossible to morter.

If that Paper Creek stuff will work for you I might be able to find a sheet to hi-res scan, you can print it out.

Thanks, Chris.  I ordered two brick sheets from N scale Architect tonight.  Let me see how they look in person, before you go to any trouble for me.  I'm not afraid to try a wash to mortar the walls after painting the brick or, if necessary, dry brush the brick color after painting the wall the mortar color.  I'll keep you posted.

Be interesting to see how you do it, Dave. I had trouble trying to get decent mortar lines using the NArch material because the relief if so shallow. But that may say more about my inexperience than the material in question.

Well, Jim, it sounds like you've got exactly the same level of experience that I do.  We'll see what I can make of it... or not.   ;)

Aberdeen & Rockfish RR Co. #205 and leased Seaboard Coast Line GP18 #1057 dig in with a short freight bound for Raeford, North Carolina, as they crest the 2.5% grade of Bethesda Hill out of Aberdeen.

I thought I'd have fun with a picture, since I got the opportunity to do a little ballasting on this stretch of track today.  That was made possible by finding some paint that I think I'm satisfied with to paint the track.  I've used Floquil "grimy black" up until now, but my supply ran out last week.  I have 75% of the track on the layout still unpainted.  This week, I found a can of a dark gray Rustoleum automotive primer that is not a perfect match, but it doesn't need to be.  Railroad track can be found in an almost unlimited palette of color.  This is a little darker than grimy black, but after weathering, it shouldn't be distracting.  Most importantly, the paint was flat finish.

Very very nice; will you be completely kudzuing the back hill by the highway bridge or going for the grassy look?
