I must admit I'm on the fence with the red trees. To me it looks like a tree dipped in green foam and by that I mean there is no depth to the color, nothing to tie the colors together between adjoining trees. Looking at the colorful fall picture, the red trees look like cores are orange, the greens look like the cores are yellow. Maybe start with your base yellow tree and lightly airbrush the perimeter leaves with some red. Then take another yellow tree and paint the perimeter with a similar green to your base green trees. I'd avoid double dipping the trees in foam as the color transitions are too hard between foam colors, painting would allow a little overspray on other leaves.

Oh, and here are my rebuilt SD50s.  That ended up being a chore in swapping more than just the mechanisms.  I ended up moving the original trucks to the new mechanisms to get rid of the tap-dancing middle axle on the new trucks.  Apparently that problem hasn't yet been addressed by Atlas.  But, the new mechanisms work much more smoothly than the seventeen-year-old ones, and these SD50s no longer slow down in the sharp curves of the layout.  Yay!

DFF

Dave, What decoders are you using in the SD50's? Do they have BEMF? Back EMF is suppose to be like cruise control, which should help eliminate the SD50's slowing down while negotiating sharp curves.

I'm with Tim. I don't really like the red trees.

You guys are correct, but, sadly, I've reached the end of my talent.  My colorblindness won't allow me to see it the way you all do.  Not only do I not own an airbrush, but I can't realistically experiment and know that I've hit the mark.  Sorry.  So, I think I'll let it go.  If the general consensus is that the red trees suck, I can always pull them as I continue to populate the layout with trees.  I really didn't want to model autumn, until everyone suggested that my trees were not representative of the spring colors I was going for, and, well, I was too lazy to start over.  Another problem is that the foliage products of yellow and orange almost appear day-glo, and I don't want to go full Popp.

Thanks,
DFF

The Digitrax DN163A1, but these decoders are several years old.  The Back EMF would not help the failure of the original mechanisms.  The slowing down is gone with the rebuilding, despite using the same decoders.

The next batch of trees are up.  In a showing of impatience, I jumped to the other end of the layout to begin the makings of a backdrop of foliage for the trestle scene.  Much work remains here, as I need to add more kudzu to fill underneath and to begin climbing these trees.

Dave, if you decide to stick with the fall I will be glad to help, I have an airbrush and the space. And we can experiment with the colors too.

That last scene looks fantastic!

S.,

I'd love to take you up on that opportunity, if anything, just because it's been years since I've seen you.  Thanks!

So ... on to the buildings! At least you don't have to worry about making them look like autumn or spring ...
