Thanks, DKS.  That's almost exactly what I have in mind.  Stop at the water heater but don't go around or over it.  The tank is supposed to be circa 2011, but I don't really want to invite a leak or have to deal with tearing out the layout later to get it out.  Let's face it water heaters are given a life expectancy of something like 7-10 years, and I'm already 3+ years in.

Funny you should ask.  I was just looking at that picture and thinking the same thing.  Scenery?  Industry?  It probably wouldn't hurt to do some research in the Hamlet area of North Carolina and see if there's an interesting feature I can throw in.

I made it, though, despite now being out of cork roadbed.  I literally have no usable scraps left.  Whew.  The mainline curves have been superelevated with strips of masking tape, and everything seems to be tracking well.  No derailments yet.
