You continue to amaze me Richie; that's looking awesome.

This week was "more rivets".....one side of the Mount car is almost done... I've been having some intermitant adhesion issues with Archer Rivets on strip stryene that's slowing me down.

The other project this week was to get the Domtar Containerboard mill's 44 tonner ready for duty.

Over 30 years ago I went to the old Domtar mill in East Angus, Quebec and remember seeing a 44 tonner they had; actually, the most vivid memory was it's horn. It had this huge array of chimes and a huge old steam bell on it. I have no idea why; it simply switched the mill and I do not believe it ever hit the CPR mains but I vividly remember the sound it made.

I wish I'd photographed it but I was just a teenager accompanying my father to the mill on the way to a cottage trip so I didn't have a camera handy. Memory says it was all blue but I changed the livery slightly for my version; after all, we in BC are far more style oriented... :D

Having researched mill switchers on the internet I found a number of early - mid 70 units had a beacon on the roof, al la the BN practice so we crowded the roof up with a number of appliances....custom decals and a lot of swearing... if you've tried removing Bachmann's handrails from a 44 tonner you'll understand.....

By the digesters at the east end of the mill

Passing the paper machine buildings.

Now the mill has two power units,it's road switcher for interchange with the CPR, an RS 3 and a "critter" for switching....

Model railroading isn't saving my life, but it's providing me moments of joy not normally associated with my current situation..... Train are good!

Had to do a little research to see how long I've been slacking.  The Gandy Dancers have been over twice since my last Weekend Update posting.  We built the grade up from the east side of the upper staging yard.

After a few adjustments, grade was laid up to the interlocking between the mains and the passenger terminal throat.  (The turnouts for said interlocking have since been acquired.)

During the next session, we built the benchwork for the passenger terminal and throat.

My Gandy Dancers kind of got away from me on that session.  I wasn't really planning on restricting access to the staging yard like that just yet, as there are a few bugs to work out.  Fortunately, it's just screwed down, so it can be removed fairly easily.

The big news for the last few weeks was the arrival of my Max Magliaro-improved K4.

It might not look like much from the outside, but its guts have been totally revamped.

Big thanks to Max!  If he's down, I may be sending another one (or two) his way.  How can I build a PRR steam fleet with only one K4?

Started playing with GIMP:

Now there's a slippery slope: way too many buttons & settings.
How the heck am I supposed to figure them out?
A bit at a time, I guess.
Would love to figure out how to cut out backgrounds and insert photographic backdrops.
You know, in all that free time ;)
Beware! The Gimp has entered the room!

With outfit cars #1 and #2 reassembled and basically ready for details, I devoted this past week's hobby time to building the replacement sides for car #3:

The BCR removed the left side door and plated in the opening, and added two windows each side - with rubber gaskets (grrr).  There is some more door hardware to be installed (door tracks, rods, stops, etc.) but I will do that after reassembling the car.

Haven't had time to do much modelling this month, but have been able to get underframes and trucks installed on a bunch of 60ft boxcar conversions.  A bit of weathering is needed then these will be a nice fleet of BC Rail boxcars for lumber service

That is one beautiful steam locomotive.   Too bad none of the manufacturers think it would sell.   Of course I am biased, being a Pennsy guy.

Nice!  I have these on my "To Do"  list.   I noticed your cars do not have the corner "buffers" [for lack of a better term]  So are these G38's rather than the G39's?   The G39's were about 18 inches taller.

Hi Inkaneer yes these are G38's well actually they are g38B as designated by Conrail and PC.  I also have the G39 and G39a in my collection as well if you check out my Picasa link you can see them there.
