FYI, seems the more recent release of these cars (here I refer to the FVM 5283cuft) have a shorter 'lip' on the coupler pocket, making it unusable in the manner depicted. With the cover removed and the pocket flipped, the spring is almost totally exposed and likely for fall out.

Specifically, I looked into a Cotton Belt car within FVM model numbers series 80825 thru 80828.

Damn, well that's frustrating. Did the cars actually get lowered in that process?

Still same height. I don't mind the work to lower so much, but the coupler pocket got me down... we need top men on this. I have a pathological hate for those #$@&% little springs! Surely they were created to drive N scales past the bounds of sanity.

I haven't tried it yet, but this may be a good way to avoid the modifications to the coupler box, also any frustration with the springs:
