N scale question of the week! 16 oct 2011

Alright, so last week was finals week, and my life was way too stressed, and time got away from me.

That kinda gets to this weeks question, Life seems to get in the way sometimes, Finals week kinda killed all my modeling time, and when I was able to get on the forums, it was a lot of quick looks, then page over to my college site, do some homework, then page back to the 'wire. The last few years have been ok time wise for me, But from 2001 to 2004 I pretty much had no time, between the Army, Divorce, School, Moving, Married again, and countless other things. The trains got put on the back burner, then into the closet. Luckly, everything was good to go when 2005 rolled around, and I was able to get back into it.

So thats the question:
What was the longest "Break" you took from Trains, and why?

I picked up a few sets of Kato stuff just before I left Japan in Oct 95 but never got to take them out of the box until four years ago.  Before that I had a small HO layout when I was in high school.
Can't model worth a darn, but can research like an SOB.

I started remodeling my house in 1999.  I did not finish until 2006.  That is the longest break I took.  I am suprised that the interest stayed, and has only increased since getting back into it.  Thanks.

Never so far. Either been playing with them or working with them. Sometimes both on the same day.

I've never really taken a break break, although once I didn't work, but planned, for a while before I moved into my current room. I've also taken a few short little no think periods when I was trying to decide what to model, which led to the several freelanced lines I've done.

About 10 years ago, I had experianced a period of instability in my life, in which resulted in a bitter divorce, several relocations and a career change.  Approximently 4 years later, I finally had control of my life and was able to re-enter the hobby once again! Currently, I have very limited modeling time available due the demands on my available FREE time.

I think my longest break from the hobby started in June of 2005 and lasted until August of 2007, a little over two years.  When my wife retired in April, 2005, we sold our too-large-for-two-of-us house, banked the $$$, jumped into our motor home and toured the country for two years as full-time RV-ers.  After tearing down a large layout, I carefully boxed everything up for storage.  In the summer of 2007, we bought a new house and settled back down and I started on my current layout.  While traveling, I did have to stop when I saw a model railroad shop, of course!

I was into model railroading as a grade-schooler, and got out of it sometime around junior high. I didn't get back into it until 1990-91, after I'd graduated from college, moved away from home, and had been working for a few years.

One of my first encounters with "organized" model railroading was selling my ancient AHM HO stuff at a Potomac Division event, to get some money to feed my new N-scale habit. :)

---------------
The only "break" from the hobby was my 13 month tour in 'Nam.

At my other post I found ways to pursue the hobby from attending club open houses, train shows, modeling and railfaning.I even took a 10 day leave and attended NMRA's "Rails Alive in '75" convention held in Dayton,Oh.

When I was station at Ft.Dix and later Ft.Knox I rented a off base apartment and had a small ISL..

While station in Korea and later Germany I had went to the "crafts" center to build kits that I shipped home.

About ten years.

I was amember at a HO club throughout college, and when I got a job and moved out of the parents place, I had no space or time to do much modeling.

Then I moved in with my wife, and the bug hit again, as we had a three bedroom apartment with space calling out for trains!  That's when I made the move to N, after meeting Skibbe and Bill Denton at a local show.  I was hooked.

Mike--My limits on modeling time are the inverse of yours.  You lose modeling time when you are taking classes and I lose modeling time when I am teaching them. I am an adjunct professor at one university and one college teaching legal studies and business law at night.  Whenever school is in session my modeling time vanishes first due to all of the prep and grading time.  I've decided to cut back in the spring to re-acquire some "me" time.
Best regards,

Roger

About three years now. The sections of my old layout are in the garage, and I'm gearing up to put it back together. I've had some health problems that have delayed the re-assembly.
