How close are you to actual construction?

Pretty close.  I have an appointment next week to have blinds put up in the window that will forever be blocked by the railroad, and that's the last obstacle to construction!  I've actually met up with a local group that meets once a week to help each other with their layouts, so maybe this thing will actually get built in some kind of reasonable timeframe!  Horseshoe will be one of the first things built, so hopefully I'll be able to show the alignment within a month or two.

I don't want to wait that long, so here's a preview.  I laid out the 13-car Pennsylvania Limited on a 42-inch radius curve, just to get an idea of what it will look like.

Any other questions about why I'm in N Scale?   ;D  These were just some quick shots, so apologies for the focus.  I can't wait!

Eric,

That passenger train on a 42-inch curve looks great.  Also, I see that you're using the same track system as Ed K.   ;D  (Sorry, Ed, I couldn't resist.)  Thanks for the mock-up and keep those photos coming as progress continues.

Be it resolved that:

1. That looks white hot for passenger op's

2. That looks white hot for passenger op's....it had to be said twice......

3. That will be a signature sight

4. It sucks like Dracula to be Ed here tonight.............or any night one could imagine......

5. This place is way cool......unless you're Ed............. ;D
Model railroading isn't saving my life, but it's providing me moments of joy not normally associated with my current situation..... Train are good!

That curve is going to be stunning.  And don't be afraid of grades and remote turnouts.  My layout is working fine (so far) and it's nothing but grades.

But really, you need to have an appointment to put up some blinds?  SHeeyit.  You might have your Man Card suspended for that one.  Not revoked, just suspended...

But after seeing this, Ed's going to think that even foam and cork are too much work.  Next time he can just skip everything and put the trains on the floor.   ;)

That looks really awesome, and it really shows off one of the major strengths of N scale.    Don't forget the #10 turnouts!  :)

I actually had the space to do a scale (43"r.) Tehachapi Loop in N, but then came to the (slightly sobering) realization that a scale Loop would need 100-car trains to look right.   Costs aside, I wasn't sure how many engines it would take to move that up a +2 % grade, and then I was also concerned about reliability with most cars still having truck-mounted & pogo couplers.

Now for the important question regarding the spot I have included in my "Bucket List" to see.  Over the years in all of my Pennsy books I have seen 2 different locos in the viewing park on display. First, was the K4 Pacific 1361, and second, was a GP7 sitting on the display track.

I hate to see legendary steamers being put outside for display and deterioration, especially those which were refurbished a few years ago for excursions, but at least the K4 was available then.  Now I do not know where it is, probably Strasburg, but I don't know.

A few years back when I was affiliated with a model train club down here, we were given a task to recreate some local landmarks on the club N layout.  Our first choice was the historical Boca Raton Passenger station, now remodeled as a museum/park/multipurpose center and the historical society did it right.  On display even now are an 0-6-0T, a Seaboard caboose, and two fluted side passenger cars.  When we modeled it, we were sure to include the display trains and it really snazzed up the modeled version.  Immediate recognition, and even made the ladies from the Boca Historical Society crack a smile.
