              The Red and Silver scheme car is not Sunset ,but were built for The Golden State Limited Train, and had names originally.

You're right, I fixed my post to say Golden State above.



Sunset cars were built by Budd,everyone calls any red and silver SP cars with either a daylight red or scarlett red letterboard a Sunset car even if not regularly assigned to that train. The Eastern diner is a puzzle to me not many modern era diners featured platform loading doors at the dining room end.

It's a full vestibule on that end.  Here's a link to the floor plan:

The Amtrak cars are ex-UP cars.  Close, but a service door is missing and no vestibule at the end.

It appears a Kato UP smoothside coach would be a better starting point to kitbash one of the two Amtrak diners.  I have some spare UP coach bodyshells, so I might use the roof/ends from that and either etch or mill the sides.

I'm not as picky as you are when it comes to passenger cars... probably due to an exceedingly limited knowledge of them. I just like the look of a passenger train behind a set of zebra striped FP9A/F9B's. A mighty fine sight.

I kitbashed a CN diner for my Super Continental that matches the series used on the train in the late 1960's but I might just pick up one for the heck of it.....





Even so, I was 2 feet off on one window on the passage side so I can't really whine about the IMRC car now can I ? ;)
Model railroading isn't saving my life, but it's providing me moments of joy not normally associated with my current situation..... Train are good!

You're having too much fun with the mill if you want to make it that complicated.  The Kato smoothside diner is this car, UP prototype and all.  :D

Is it really, including the belt rail down the center of the roof?  Great!  That makes things easy.

Kato doesn't have the bodyshells in stock, but I'm sure I can track down one of the cars.  I probably have one in the NYC set that I don't run anymore.  I think I'll go that route, much much easier.

I've heard it called a cable duct, but yes.  Well, I've heard it called a roof walk too, but that's just pure silliness.

I don't do much SP modeling since they didn't come into Chicago... but... the Golden State sure did.

You can get scary close to a model of the RI/SP Golden State now with readily available cars!  Usually we only have coaches/sleepers for esoteric trains, but in this case we have the Rivarossi/Atlas corrugated cars for the dormitory and observation, and now have the prototype diner from CCS.  I think the only car missing is the coffee shop lounge for at least the RI supplied trains.

I am interested in the NP model even if it is a foobie.  Does anyone know how the IM NP paint matches up with the Rapido paint??  Anyone with pictures.  I thought IM has done NP in the past....coaches maybe??

         Yes the Kato UP diner is the exact car I even have one in the Phase I scheme as in one of your photos. American Model Builders did a laser kit of these cars the laser sides could be used,but as you say your NYC car is the exact model. Union Pacific has always referred to the roof top center strip as "Wire Cable Duct" and it is shown labled thus on car diagrams. This conduit area did carry car wireing.               Now to answer the other question,the NP Two Tone Green used on my IM Centraillia NP former North Western coaches closely matches the color as used on my Rapido duplex sleeper, and the color used by Walthers on their NP cars is also very close. It is had to see a difference on Con Cor's NP Green cars,the Custom Painted KATO cars that I got of a Tex-n-Rails auction (don't know who painted them) also match nicely and I used old Accuflex DK green NP paint to paint out some areas where decal initals had been applyed, that were not correct. If you look at most real smooth side cars not stainless steel they all appear to weather out on the road as car washing can help faid the paint on some schemes, I saw quite a few stored UP cars before some went to Amquack and Alaska where the Gray color on the roof sun faided and looked silver or white. Therefore I say even if every manufacturers NP Green cars were not well matched ,which they seem to be, a slight color difference would probably look ok.                                  Nate Goodman (Nato).

Thanks for the feed back.  I will have to order the diner to go with my Rapido sleepers and coaches.  I personally do not like the match on the dark green on the Walthers cars.  I have two baggage cars that will get sold on Ebay as soon as I can find better cars hopefully from Rapido or IM/Centrailia.

Are the pics of the X29s of N scale models or HO? I've never seen these in person and find it hard to believe the N scale models would have separate ladders and grabs, though I'd be happy if they did. I could use some of the CGW cars.

I have a dozzen of these in the B&O 13 States paint from a BOHS special run many years back. They are very nice cars and happen to match a B&O M26a but they don't have seprate grabs/ladders. I'm in for all of the B&O's this time around. There were a dozzen numbers other than the special run done and I have been trying to get those since I started building a B&O roster. I think in that time I have found a total of 2 of the additional cars. I've seen them come on on Ebay and it always seems they are the number I already own.

        The Kato UP diner in Amtrak Phase I scheme was in the 6 Car Set 106-011 consisting of a Coach,Diner,RPO,Baggage,Sleeper,Observation. This was one of the standard Kato Green Boxes with snap lid and Green cardboard Slip Cover. Nate Goodman (Nato). "Pud that is a nice CN diner you Kitbashed.!"
