We are served by Pony Express in the West. just
got the new MR. Like the door layout a lot. Nice
scenery, reminds me of Dave's PENN.

The layout was nice.

I hate to admit it, but I bought the issue not only because it noted an N scale layout on the cover, but also because of the Rod Stewart layout cover.  I don't care about Stewart.  He hit his peak before I was an embryo.  His layout, though is really amazing.

Did anyone else find this to be an odd December issue?  It wasn't stacked a variety of articles.  It was a little DCC heavy, but lacked the holiday newbie features, loads of ads, and pieces explaining basics, such as the three major scales: HO, O, and...uh...HOn30.

Realistically
the January issue is on newsstands (if any still exist) when newbies are shopping on 'Black Friday' and in January after the decorations are packed away.  November and December tend to be the 'high point' for the hobby press befoore the newbie education series begin again...

Here's what Kalmbach told me:

Dear Sir:

Thank you for the inquiry regarding your Model Railroader subscription.  The December issue is in transit.  Due to delivery delays within the postal transit, your issue should arrive on or before November 15th.  Thank you for your continued patience.

With its seasonal approach, our book, Scenery by the Seasons, offers a unique look at scenery.  Designed for all model railroaders, the book is especially valuable for those who are in the planning stages of their layouts or those looking to refresh their layouts through a change in seasons.  The book features a range of season-specific projects that incorporate the latest scenery construction tips and techniques.  To order your copy, please click on the link below:

I haven't gotten mine in Alaska yet but their policy has always been to deliver by the 15 th. After that they will send you one via 1st Class Mail. I think that this is more of a USPS issue than a Kalmbach issue. They battle with the tsunami of catalogs this time of year. Sounds like a good issue and I look forward to reading it. Now I need to go out and shovel snow.

Best wishes, Dave

I got mine, it's an Erie RR layout based on a town North of Cleveland  ::)

I guess the scenery is nice, but I'd say give me Dave's door over that one any day.

I see what you did there... ;D

In spite of its obviously aquatic prototype location, I found it to be a very nice layout.  Would like to have seen more pictures.  The code 55 definitely looks good.

I'm not as big a fan of the over-and-under thing...  I did that on my previous door layout and the impossibly sharp curves/steep grades were even more annoying than having the same train traverse the same scene twice on two different tracks.  It's a very effective way to increase your mainline run in a tiny space, but I found it comes with too much baggage.  My current flat layout is a direct result of my experience with the folded figure eight.

For all we complain about MR not breaking new ground, I thought the three sound articles were sort of novel.  How they work, how to install and how to operate realistically by proto rules.  A new thing in MR, and a new focus on the articles.  Maybe not as ground breaking as their push of DCC or standards years ago, but I thought it was one of their better issues in that regard.  I also love the Rod Stewart layout feature and the other layouts as well.

Chuck,I think so to..

I am thinking about subscribing again.

I don't care for Rod Stewart's layout to much like F&SM nor do I care for the infomercial article for sound systems.

As far as those "specialty books" its a sad thing since those book was made the articles that use to be publish in MR. :(
