For Europe - mostly Germany, just read their listings beforehand - there are some who are clearly willing to ship to the US and some who are not. Just find the ones who do.  After a while you will be adept at "Model railroading German" as a second language.

What gets me are the sellers that say they ship to North America, but not the US.

So what , the people who sell have a right to cherry pick . Just think if the sellers , you , were mandated to sell to all countries , and you had bad experiences with the country of Goscrewyourself . To think everybody is tickled pink to deal with the USA is too much of a stretch .

I get a lot of my stuff from the U.S., mail order and ebay.  If it is not clearly stated in the description, I ask politely.
Right now I decided to bid for something on ebay-US  ;D

Often I have to pick up packages at our local customs office, which is fortunately quite close to my home.  They request a proof of payment, because people always lie at them about the value of stuff.
What becomes a problem is getting free replacement parts, because, free or paid, the stuff has a value and dues must be paid  ::) :o

I've got stuff off ebay from Japan before stuff from my same state before.  I have used Plaza Japan as well with no problems.  Once I transfered money to someone overseas who then bought an item and mailed it to me.

Canada is the worst in terms of time, I guess it take a while to get things over the border. Never a problem, but it takes a while (Fasttracks).

I understand sellers not wanting to sell to ppl in the US be atleast give me a heads up so I pass over it.

I bid on and won an auction the seller said they ship to all of North America. I asked for the invoice only to get a response sorry I don't ship to the US.

We ship overseas without incident, via USPS International.  Never been an issue.

I,m an American livin in Germany also. I have developed good connections over the years and I usually get what I need with no problems. My main source is Chuck though. He has everything I need and if not, he goes out of his way to help me to get what I need. His shipping prices are the best also. You cant get better service than that. If ebay sellers say, I only ship US, well they can keep their stuff. One said it was a hassle to fill out the custom forms...oh well. I always get what I need thru some great people all over the world! Many of these connections have developed thru great forums like this one.

It's stunning how long it takes to get shipments to folks in Canada...

This seemed to start right around April of this year.  Before that it would be 8 days, 12 days... Maybe a couple of weeks.

But now it's routinely over two weeks, with some as long as a month.

And Canadian Custom's is opening far more packages and adding duty to them.

I am surprised you say it take that long; I recently got two USPS packages from the great 48 in three days.... it took eight days for a similar package from Vancouver....

As for the Canadian Customs and Revenue Agency; they are hit and miss. "Toy trains" seems to be a free pass as a description; "hobby materials" is a death sentence - they think it's your evil, chemical paint that we know will kill all Cariboo or some such tripe.....

All I can say is never, never, never, never use UPS to ship to Canada - they add over $ 30.00 in brokerage fees (and they are the broker) - the U.S.P.S.-Canada Post add $ 5.00......UPS is a borderline criminal offender in my opinion with those brokerage fees....
Model railroading isn't saving my life, but it's providing me moments of joy not normally associated with my current situation..... Train are good!

For me its the other way around. NH's USPS is slower than a glacier. When I ordered signals from SMD it took 1 day to get from NB to the NH border... it took USPS 7 days to get it the remaining 200 miles to my house... ::)
