OK, picked some up at Wally World..been soaking for 4 hours now and just managed to get a tiny bit of paint off around the fans and the edges....this may take a while...

You know, the damn Bachmann shell isn't horrible.

Yes it is horrible. They screwed up the flares nicely.

I heard the Bachmann SD45 hood is closer to scale width, they probably did a better job on the number boards than Kato (can you say "squinty"?).

If this is in reference to repainting one of the newly-announced units when they arrive, why not just pick up an undecorated shell?  More often than not, Kato makes the bodyshell available shortly after the engine is released.  I believe to date only the GS4 never has had the bodyshell available as a separate part.  The SD45 part number was 921300 the first time around.

....... I contacted Kato and there where no SD 45 shells available.

Kato was reading in some forums that undes don't sell and they have stopped offering </snarky

Was it the 91% stuff or better?

Sounds like the 70% stuff with a reaction like that -- i.e. nothing.

I've had great luck with ELO in the past on stuff I've painted and had no reaction problems with Kato shells, but I've never tried stripping Kato paint off their shells, only my own (usually ModelFlex).  I gave up on their paint a long time ago.  I just buy an Undec shell now, it's worth the $20-30 to avoid the PIA of stripping them.  I understand that's not an option on the SD45s though.

If all else fails, I use a 75%/25% mix of Denatured Alcohol and Laquer thinner. I normally use it for cleaning overspray of Lexan RC car bodies and have used it in a pinch to strip a shell. You must be careful with it though. It can be a bit agressive if the mix is a little strong toward the Laquer side.
