What is up with the numbering on that job...my eyes are melting!

It doesn't look right or at least (to me) dates this to much much later.

Just checked through my many reference books and it looks O.K. to me.

I think where Kato may have screwed up is in the font for "PENNSYLVANIA"...  Kato shows a giant Clarendon font on their model:

...whereas Pennsy used a Roman font with the single stripe scheme.

That's what's making the model look "off" to me.

Check out the number font completely wrong. I've seen a lot of block fonts like that in the later years, but I figured Kato wouldnt pull something so obscure/late.

Here's a photo for comparison:

And here's the same number by Rivirossi painted in five stripe tuscan.  Was this loco repainted at one time?

The easiest letter to see the difference on is the 'S'.

I agree that the number fonts in the photos are different also.

I noted the difference also when I saw the model photo a few days ago.  Looks like people wanting a good single-stripe version will have to paint/decal it themselves.

Is there any easy way to remove the printing from a Kato model on such a wide scale without damaging the paint?

I'd be curious to see what photo they were working from when they did that.

Kato doesn't seem to be the type not to care about that type of thing. Not to care if the photo isn't representative of most of the class, yes, but not that it's completely wrong like that.

I know that lettering is easy to remove from their passenger cars.  A little alcohol and a pencil eraser takes it off in no time without bothering the paint underneath.  Just take is slow and don't rub too hard.

At one point John Lennon said something along the lines of the Beatles could record a fart and sell a million copies.  I think Kato just recorded a fart, and will sell a million copies anyway.

There are two numbers being released of the single stripe. Lets hope the other fart is not so much a fart as this one. I was enjoying picking up each paint scheme.
