New Pennsy Layout - First Look

John Drye has set up a blog for the construction of his new Pennsy Horseshoe Curve layout. The blog is just getting started so there are not a lot of posts, but last night we did a quick iPhone video of the Broadway Limited on various parts of the layout.  The lava rocks visible are the unpainted paper scenery base, a technique he picked up from Howard Zane. This is going to be a cool RR. The link is hhttp://PRRHC.blogspot.com

Here is the video:

Note the super elevated curve coming into MG Interlocking.

An unusual choice of music, but very cool!  I did note what looks like a tight frog in the MG plant, based on one of the cars riding up and leaning over.

I can't wait to see more!

Just trying to keep it fresh. Bagpipes and electronic dance beat - whoda thunk it?

I didn't notice the tight frog but lots of work remains there and everywhere else too.

I think the car was already derailed going into the crossover, and may have re-railed itself (awkwardly) on the frogs.

Probably right. Just before we videoed that, a clumsy oaf managed to drop two of the pax cars on the ground.  You just can't get good help these days. It's amazing JD didn't box my ears, or throw me out.  As an alibi, we had just returned from an op session on an HO layout and it was pretty late, but we wanted to get the video done as JD needed it for another purpose. So were were a little tired and rushed.

I never thought I'd say this, but  after working in O scale the last year or so.... How do you N scalers keeps them cars on the rails? Everything is so tiny.

It looks like a great layout, I love these Pennsy trains  ;D
The music sounds like modern Scottish folk music recordings,  which I love as well.  I might even have this one on CD.
Did anyone mention the variation of height of the box cars going uphill?  Some riding high on their trucks, then a new Atlas car riding low, same as here.

I hope to see more of John's progress.

The music is a mash up of The Royal Scots Dragoon Guards Pipe and Drum Military Band and a garageband electronic beat.

Bernie, is this the gentleman's layout you were talking about on the MRC podcast back in '08, I think? It was during their layout planning themed shows,

Phil

Probably. This is the layout in my old house.

He has made a lot of progress especially when you consider that nearly of of his model RR stuff was destroyed or damaged in the fire. It is amazing to see how much he re-accumulated.

BTW I don't advise weathering by house fire as a useful technique. I spent about 6 hours trying to wash soot of off things when we helped JD salvage what he could. It didn't work too well. The hot soot slightly melts what it touches making cleaning difficult. Painted or plastic surfaces are especially tough.

Gents; Thanks for the comments. Bernie is the music maestro (themes for the videos) and art director (in the process of painting the backdrop--check out the latest posts for a look). Some of your work has helped inspire this layout--I hope to achieve the high standards you have set.Great point about freight car height. One of the many items on the to-do list is getting all the rolling stock down to reasonable heights above the rails. Fortunately 24" curves and long turnouts helps alleviate the problem with bashing wheels up against the car ends. Thanks to Bernie's and the rest of the crew's help, we are getting there. Thanks,John
