My only idea is that you should have me do the design work for whatever you want  ;)

Agreed on the U-Channel hopper, but this is another model that needs to be released by the ton, not the usual MT trickle...

Lee

You are quite correct and if truth be known I would prefer to see these based on Atlas's design of the  fishbelly and offset side hoppers.  MTL's are too light but the metal in the Atlas design really helps.

How about a nice high-side gon, like:

http://www.rrpicturearchives.net/showPicture.aspx?id=123462

These are pretty high riders to start with, so that's less of an issue, ;), and MT would do a great job with the stand-off ladders, etc.

And:

*How about a 100T truck?

* How about a new coupler?  Smaller, no slinky, maybe some new clever body-mount hardware to go with...

Um, haven't those been done by MDC already?

Gary - these are easily available on Ebay - just search around - sold in groups of 3, 6, 10, even 20 or so. And DJJX decals are available from Highball and Oddballs....

Also, the Herzog cars are proto "paintovers" of some utility car - take off the Herzog lettering and put on DJJX decals and presto, you have a correct DJJX car.

I've written to Athearn suggesting they do these in the scrap schemes, as well as to Intermountain since the Canadian coal gons are also scrap hauling these days.

Ed K:

Re: those chromey CGTX short hoppers...  I think these are on "North American Railcars" list of projects....  You might want to ask about these at Springfield.

Depends on what you mean by "done".   ;)  I have fairly modest detail standards for run-of-the-mill cars, but the MDC gons don't quite make it -- those ladders are a bit too much for me.  But this would be an excellent candidate for Athearn to upgrade.  [And thanks for the ebay tip Lou.]

Mostly I'm interested in a new coupler though.  Maybe I just need to switch to Z couplers.

Uggggh!  Those ex-MDC/Athearn Thrall hi-side gons are quite possibly the worst model railroad tooling still in production.  They were bad when they came out 30 years ago.  And there's not really anything you can do with them....at least nothing I would want to do 30+ times for a unit coal train, for sure.  I have a train of these things and if there was any other option they would be gone in a second.  Suggesting anything to Athearn other than throwing away their tooling and starting over (like they did in HO!) should be criminal.  ;-)

And, not a great choice for Micro-Trains IMHO.  These cars are scrap service cars now, but they paid their dues in unit coal train service.  I need 36 numbers for my FPPX/LCRX train, and although I am young, I just don't have the time to wait for MTL.  (yes, if they were to do the un-numbered/decal thing I would be in, but I don't see that happening.)

I do agree those cars would be great to have from someone though!  Maybe Trainworx would be interested.  Seems like the tooling for the body would be easy, and just have add-on ladders and be done.

Didn't intend to hijack the thread here, but...and no offense to Joe....we have to be careful what we wish for with Micro-Trains. (and Athearn!)

Converted troop sleepers--should be an easy one!

That's a good one!!!

talk about a softball! MT shoulda hit that one outta the park already!  YES YES and YES!

Sorry, but this sounds more like a job for Bob @ TrainCat than for MT, maybe a joint venture between the two. There are numerous roads who used different conversions of the troop sleeper and kitchen cars for head end equipment  - B&O had two versions, C&O had their own, N&W, C&EI, CB&Q, FW&D, C&S, Monon, PM, NKP, NYC, NH, REA, M&StL, B&M, RI, DL&W, EL & Frisco (I may be missing some - PRR? & Milwaukee?) -  and then there were the Alaska boxcars, BAR cabooses, D&RGW dynamometer, and gosh knows what other types of cars these became. This seems like a pretty simple project where car sides, possibly end doors, and some roof vents and decals are all that's needed, not a new body style casting.

I remember Cannonball Car Shops announced back in 2005 they were going to produce brass etched N scale car side kits for all these different types. Unfortunately, it doesn't look like their web site has been updated since 2005, much less the product produced, and the 'announcement' for the N scale etchings can still be found on http://www.mrrwarehouse.com/trpmain.htm  about 1/6 of the way down. But there's no simple way to know if they actually produced these etchings or sell them. It certainly is obvious they didn't try to market them, since no one in the N scale community (including MT) knows about them.

Joe and I have had several discussions already and Eric and I did discuss it at Hartford.

I agree Doug.  I actually only suggested it because it was a high rider... [sorry again Joe].  So, even though MT offers second-to-none tooling quality, I'd go elsewhere for something I *really* wanted, like that Trinity reefer that Ed N. posted.   :D  Trainworx is an interesting choice for the high-side gon.  I would definitely buy some of those.

That's interesting, I was never as bothered by that car as I was by other things...

My love of scrap haulers must be getting the better of me...

The hoppers are Trinity/North American Dispatch/North American Car Corp PD series hoppers. The three bay car is a PD3000 and the 5 bay appears to be a PD5100. The PD5000/5100 cars were done by Walthers years ago. The models were crude. the ladders rungs scaled out to over 8 scale inches! This car would be great to model because of all the colorful schemes including ADM, Wonderbread and others.

These cars are great for plastics, flour and other comodities. Here are a few colorful schemes:

Some different styles of covered hoppers would be good to do. There are some styles that have yet to be done.

Not sure who these cars were built by but would be way cool...

These "Whitewater Cars" are in great need i see these cars alot and no one has done them. They haul fracturing sand in them here.

The Carbon Black cars would be way cool.

The idea of a decal sheet for multipules is something i have wanted forever.
