N Scale Ideas

Hi Guys,

I am working on a list of future potential projects and was wondering if I could get some input on body styles that still need to be done in N Scale.  My main requirement at this time is to provide subjects that ran on more than one road or one region... so specialized stuff or one owner won't make the cut.  I have a provisional list that I am working on that includes reworking some of our older tooling so I don't really need any suggestions in that department.  I'm hoping that this next round of designs will incoporate a lot of the things I've seen on this site...good stuff here.  Anyway, looking for a little inspiration and direction.

Cheers

Joe

Hi Joe,

I would like a two-bay open side covered hopper like you make in Z scale.
Similar to what Kato had probably planned on doing, as they did both the open and closed sided versions in HO, but only did the close side version in N. I could never really understand why Kato declaired this car a disater - but that is not the topic here. :o I loved their hopper and have always wanted the open side version. I know Deluxe already does this car, but it is recycled from way way back in n scale history and the quality is too low to bother with.

Also, 40' steel reefer with PLUG DOOR. Like your 58500 series reefer, but rebuilt with a plug door and correct ASTF hatches/ roof walks. I know Red Caboose took a stab at a PFE reefer, and it was okay, but they are sledom, if ever produced.

Would Micro-Trains ever consider another N scale locomotive? ??? :-X ;D

50's through 70's era tank cars (preferable plain black).  Platform style caboose (PC/Conrail).

Do the Northeastern Caboose, as long as it is designed to stand at the correct height, as is with the correct trucks.  There probably are 30 roads you can prototypically paint on it, with most of them having multiple schemes.  You can do three variations and cover most of the schemes accurately.  I'm looking at it, but I'd have no objection if you beat me to it since it will be a few years before I can do it.

52' mill gons - in typical 1960's to 1980's designs - with and withour corrugated sides

65' mill gons

Some interesting things that run on many railroads - even though they themselves are rare:

heavy haul flatcars

DODX Nuclear Waste Cask carriers (documented on CSX, NS, UP and BNSF)

SD40-2...!!!!!!!

I SECOND the Northeastern Standard Steel caboose.  It was by far the most common caboose style east of the Mississippi.

75' TTX TOFC flats to go along with your wonderful 89' TOFC flats.

X58 boxcar (ran on PRR, PC, CR, LV, etc.).

I will undoubtedly think of more...

I'll second the X-58, also forget to mention the waffle side boxcars used throughout the U.S. from the 70's on.

I will third the X58!  This car was the most common 50' PRR, PC, LV and CR boxcar in the United States starting in 1965 until 2005.  They could be seen anywhere and everywhere.  Another great car would be the 52' 6" 70 ton ACF gondolas that Tangent Scale Models brought out in HO.  They could be done for PRR, PC, Conrail, SOUTHERN PACIFIC (hint, hint), Wabash, N&W, and ACL.  They roamed all corners of this continent hauling every imaginable commodity a gondola can haul.  They were out there starting in the 1950's until the 1990's.  I would also like to see runner packs of your three bay hoppers in Conrail, but I digress...  Thanks.

Something
that breaks ride height barriers.  Whatever it is I will probably buy if it rides properly low...
