Believe it or not no... deregulation didn't occur till 1980... and even after that, the NS merger and then the subsequent bid to buyout Conrail absorbed a lot of attention.  It wasn't until 1986 or so that NS made a large effort to lease, sell or abandon redundant trackage.

Thanks for all the suggestions so far - please keep them coming! They'll keep me busy for a while. Chicago sounds interesting ..... I'd not considered that far north. Chicago is one of my favourite US cities, and as luck would have it I'm planning on hopping over the Pond for a visit later this year ....... specific locations anyone?

Urban N&W isn't something I've seen modelled before (no doubt someone will tell me it has been, and point me tp pics) and that is part of the appeal - combined with restricted space of course!

Looks like Mark4design is the way to go for hi-hoods then - I had looked at using Atlas parts, but none are currently available as spares. Perhaps when the next round of SD35s hits the stores.....

The Mark 4 will work with Kato tooled units well. Since Kato hoods are overscale ("fat") the Atlas hoods (scale) are narrower, which presents certain problems when combining the two.

Donor shells for Atlas china tooled locos include the high-nose SD35 and high-nose GP38.

in my mid 70's Trains magazine there are abandonment notices of former NKP and Wabash trackage.  deregulation didn't mean they couldn't abandon trackage - PC dumped trackage like crazy, that's why my beloved L&HR withered on the vine.

How urban and what kind of traffic are you interested in?

Coal traffic as it moves and is switched in division point yards in located right in the center of smaller cities (Bluefield, WV; Portsmouth, OH as examples) would be one option.  Roanoke would give you this plus shop complex switching.

Coal for lake shipping or Atlantic coastal shipping would be another option with Cleveland, Toledo, and Sandusky, OH and Norfolk, VA and if you are wanting that sort of think on a smaller scale there is Ohio River transload in Kenova, WV.

Interchange traffic in a place like Hagerstown, MD or Cincinnati, OH would be another way to go. 

Then you've got the freight traffic generated by industry in big cities - mostly places N&W gained access to via the 1964 mergers as has already been mentioned - Pittsburgh, Clevelend, Chicago, Buffalo, etc. and also smaller cities like Fort Wayne and Muncie, IN and the Akron-Canton area in OH or Wheeling, WV.

Thanks for the links Jeff, very useful stuff.

My concept is of tracks threading through fairly large buildings, feeding industries that take only 1 or 2 cars each.

Industry type doesn't matter too much, but some varaiety of car types would obviously be a bonus.

For what it is worth, Atlas says a container with Norfolk and Western SD35 high hoods shipped in December.  Wrong paint scheme though for the late 70s, unless some of them stayed around in the hamburger scheme.

Some of them probably did. I certainly did see them as late as 1977.
