Nah,Bachmann left a bad taste in my mouth in the 90s.I don't consider their N scale line as useable unless something drastic has happened.

Oh... OK. Oops. I misunderstood what you were trying to say, Mark. I incorrectly attributed your "...joke" as comment on Mike's retort to Freighttrain's remark. Yeah, I have the current B 'J' and am in relative awe of how much attention they paid to the details. It's a darned good model. I just wish there was a better mix of cars available to pull behind it.

Related (and further off-topic to the thread), I'm seeking photos from one particular 611 excursion between Atlanta and Chattanooga in the late '80s, preferably photos taken from the train. There was a yellow Ferrari chasing the train on this trip between Carbondale and Cohutta and it would be fun to have a couple of shots of it.

I tended to stay away from 'Botchman' for along time.  I did break down and get one of their 44 tonners.  They did a great job on this little critter.  They definately hit a homerun on this loco and hopefully they can get better diesels in the future.

odd place for a discussion of bach-mann's merits....

in recent b-mann offerings...
they have made both exquisite and horrific.

the best is a good spectrum 2-8-0.
not too sure of the worst,
but lets use the 2-6-6-2 ...

the n&w J is between those two.

Until one can leave off the caveat
"run it before you buy it"

b-mann will have to live with being bashed...

I find it very hard to defend b-mann.

Ah, yes... Victor's current whipping-boy, the 2-6-6-2. Nothing a re-motoring couldn't fix.  ;D

Something drastic has happened.

something incremental has happened....

Freighttrain,
run it before you buy it.

b-mann has improved some locos.
they have not improved them all.

ooof.
let me know how much your re-motoring improves it.

Hi C855B,

the 2-6-6-2 is pretty bad and the motor is only one of its many flaws.
Since you seem to think the motor is flawed,
consider that is the same one in the  'J' and heavy mountain
and the FM thing bachman did.

Close to 20 years has happened. The Spectrum J is a fine running loco. The "try before you buy" mentality applies to all loco's now. Of the 6 Kato Heritage SD70ACe's I purchased, 3 of them had problems, one of which was missing a gear in the truck. No manufacture is immune from problems. It seems recently I am "adjusting" more Kato and Atlas loco's that we sell at the shop than anything. You really should find yourself a Spectrum J Class, Heavy Mountain, Consolidation, or 44 Ton to try before condeming Bachmann for their sins of 20 years ago.

This same mentality exists in the N-trak club that I am part of. People refuse to believe that I can run a Bachmann, LifeLike or Athearn loco without problems. My favorite diesel consist to run is a Bachamnn SD45, Athearn SD70 w/sound, Walthers GP38-2, and an Intermoutain SD40-T2. They ran for 4 hours straight last show at the hands of an 8 year old boy that was hanging out around the layout. He wanted to run trains so I handed him the throttle and left him have fun.

Sorry for the wandering topic, back to Trainfests lack of announcements.

Notice the smiley in that. I was just ribbing you.

I'm not concerned about the 'J'. I think the 2-8-8-2 motor bug was likely a batch issue specific to that production run.

Are memories so short? Wasn't it "Botchmann" who gave us the much-praised 44-tonner? Or am I am mistaken?

Since the 44 tonner was mentioned, what Z scale coupler will fit them?

Shortly
thereafter they completely borked the trucks on the Centennial.  I would call those model releases a wash and continue with a very skeptical eye on each new product/run.  Unfortunately the 44toner was not on my personal wish list while I was eagerly awaitng the updated and retooled Centennial with funding allocated for three (and financing for a ourth in place) that has been released to feed my newly diagnosed GENSET addiction.

Definately still a no pre-order while you inspect, fondle and thouroughly test the model at the LHS before Mr. Wallet visits the cash register...
