I want start a scale-agnostic group that focuses on making modern shortline boxcars.  I think that we can share artwork and decals, suggest paint colors and graffiti approaches, offer helpful weathering and modeling techniques, and help each other with photography.

I'll start by posting a prototype photo of car, and documenting my progress along the way.  If you are interested, join in. :)

I have my victims.  When is the kick-off?  Will the project be freeform or in stages?

Kick off is now!  Let's keep this in stages, so everyone can work at their own pace.

Stage 1 would be...details?  primer?  basecoat?  Apologies for the dumb questions. I expect the more experienced weatherers will be already cleaning up after spraying on the perfect base color.  To minimize experimentation time, I would be happy to follow some guidance such as color recommendations. Perhaps others would too.

Cheers

What I have so far is my Rust base color sprayed.  This is the spray paint method outlined in my book.

I don't really know what to use for the boxcar color(s), but I'm leaning towards a mix of Grimy Black and Roof Brown for the left side of the car, with a few drops of Undercoat Light Grey mixed in for the right side.  What are your thoughts on this?

Any area where the rust is appearing through I'll "mist" with the airbrush.

And just to recap, this is the car I'm planning on:

Guys, just keep in mind one thing about that EEC car-the Genesis car has the dreadnaught
ends-the EEC has the more common non-terminating ends.

One other issue is that the number of side ribs doesn't match. The earlier SIECO cars (as represented by the Athearn model) had 7 on either side of the door, the later SIECO and Evans cars had 6 ribs on either side of the door.

The new ExactRail Evans boxcar is actually a pretty good match for this car, other than the particular EEC car being that odd later design that doesn't have proper corner posts. (Just FYI now that the ExactRail car has been released; I don't expect anyone to throw away what they've started already.)

Well, I been working, and working, and working on this, had a helluva a time trying to get the right color patches and feel so I finally stopped trying to exactly replicate the picture and just tried to find an acceptable result, ultimately I'm happy with the outcome (and it actually looks worse in the extreme close-up photo than on th elayout) but this is as good as I'm gonna be able to get it!

Well done Jan.  Nice to see some life in this thread again.  I certainly haven't made any progress on mine...

I've followed this and enjoy what you all accomplish weathering cars.  Someday I hope to try it myself.  Here's one thar shoed up on railcarphoto which would be a good candidate.

I finally got the paint on mine last night but couldn't match the greenish color.  I mixed Grimy Black and yellow, thinking the yellow would mix with the blue tones in the Grimy Black and create a dirty green.  But when it dried, it turned out grey. :-\  I'll have photos soon.
