Was doing some ESM autumn cleaning and came across some merchandise a LHS returned years ago.  One of these was included:

Someone was asking about these a few months ago.  It's unopened, and available if still needed.

What's the story on these cars? I picked up 2 pre-ESM cars in GN paint a few Timoniums ago and come to find out GN never operated them (that I can find). Now I'm not sure what to do with them.

The real ACF 3500pd was a signature car for the New York Central in the 1960s, and was produced only for the NYC.  AHM tooled the original cars circa 1969, but released only fictitious paint schemes on the model.  The tooling was retired in the early 1970s.  ESM commissioned Minitrix (using Atlas as a go-between) to resurrect the tooling in 1990, and released nine prototypical schemes on the model in 1991 and 1992, covering all the NYC schemes and most of the PC/CR schemes.  The MDT scheme from the mid 1990s was scheduled to be run but never got into production.

Hey Bryan.

If that's a Penn Central car..... did any make it to CSX?

I don't think so Ron.  Most of them were retired, and the remaining ones AFAIK were transferred to MDT or sold to private companies.  I don't believe there are many left.  If any were retained, I would think they would still be in their CR livery - maybe with the resurrected NYC reporting marks, but unlikely any of these venerable 45-year-old relics have been painted in CSX livery.

Well.... I didn't say they had to be painted for CSX.  In fact, if they're in ol old paint, so much the better.

I just wondered if any made into the system, or if they had all been sold off.

Does anyone make decals for that?  Now that I look at it, I want to paint mine!

MDT took over all CR's remaining cars if I remember correctly. They were repainted gray with rad markings. I haven't seen any in years. Also I think these cars were exclusive to the Boston line, running cement between New York an stops in Worcester, Framingham and sometimes in Boston.

Did these cars range off the PC when they were in service? Like to California? Fat chance probably. If not, Lee, I'll donate mine to you in the hopes you find decals.

Dan, I used to see the MDT cars on the CR in NJ quite frequently - I think they were usually in PIOI/OIPI - Newark to Pittsburgh.

I haven't seen one in a very long time though...

They didn't have left the Northeast since all of the specialized facilities to service them were on former NYC trackage.  And even if some had stayed in the CSX system, they would have stayed up north.

Contrary to popular belief, ESM still has some of the SKUs in stock including one of the original NYC schemes.  So unless you are looking specifically for one of the MDT or private company deco schemes, check the ESM website to see what's available.
