I don't think I was around these parts for the Kato pronunciation debate...
Eric,Pennsy in its own territory is what I find exciting... Same for the Colorado narrow gauge. It's awesome that you can combine the two and get something more satisfying than then sum of the parts, but for me, transplanting one or the other would take away from the charm.The closest I think one gets to the "best of both worlds" in real life is the East Broad Top or the ET&WNC.

That is one nice layout,but I will be damned if I can figure out why they built it the way they did.
The layout is built on a hollow core door,with 2" of extruded styrofoam topped by a sheet of half inch plywood.Makes absolutely no sense to me at all.
