New roadnames for the SD70Ace
« on: July 24, 2009, 12:55:04 PM »

Was at my LHS today and he had the advertiser copy of next month MR, on the backcover add Kato mentions the next two road names for the Ace at the bottom of the add. Looks like CSX and BNSF modeler will not need to strip UP Ace's anymore. It also state they are doing other roadnames but no mention of what they are.
Which ever side of the track I am on is the right side.

Why not NS?
I see these all the time and they are about the only modern stuff I like:

Chris,

Well, if Kato won't provide you with decorated NS GEVOs, you could always model NS's "undecorated" units fresh off the factory floor:

Because that unit is not an SD70ACe, it's an SD70M-2, which is the DC equivalent.  NS hasn't bought in SD70ACe to the best of my knowledge.

I'm sure others can tell you the spotting differences between the two (I can't).  I asked the KATO rep at the National Train Show if they were going to do the M-2 (CN and FEC also have them) and he said they were looking into it to see if it was cost effective.

The "W" says it is the DC version of a SD70Ace with no external differences. They call them SD70M-2's.

Whoever the 'W' is... tell him/her to look at the conductors side.

The biggest difference I see is in what would be the inverter cabinet. Vents on the Ace's, smooth on the M2's. I was going to strip 2 UP's for FEC but decided to wait. Bob.

Note the differences in inverter cabinets and underside piping (which wouldn't translate to the model)

Engineer side changes are mainly relegated to piping which, again, likely wouldn't be on the model regardless

I see.

Here is "W" http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SD70

Sounds easy enough for Kato to just do it anyways.  :P
