It appears it was done to accommodate traversing an 11" (maybe) radius without compromising the body-mounted couplers and skirt ladders.  It's not noticeable on the turns and it's a small "sacrifice" in order for the car to run on most layouts.

Maybe I have to relearn geometry, but wouldn't having on the pin offset to the outside cause more interference with the ladders on the RPO which are to the inside?  ???

By offsetting the pivot forward we are able to get greater swing to the rear to avoid hitting the draft gear box.  I wanted to use body mounts so we could include the steps on the longer cars and this made it possible.  One of the restrictions on the designs of all of these heavyweights was to make sure they operated on the 9" garden variety track out there.  With the vestibule steps down, as they will be on the next three cars, you don't have much room for swing in any direction.  Hopefully this approach will work for the casual railroader and the proto guys as well.

Craig,

Not to start a flame...Could the same have been said if the you or the modeler were considering using Accumate, Kato or some of the other coupler systems?   ;) That was my only point...just thought it was a throw away comment that wasn't necessary to defend your product.  From what I see, it doesn't need any defense.

Joe

Why is it necessary to take a shot at MTL to defend your design?

Joe
MTL

Because it's the truth and was necessary to defend our design choice.  That wasn't intended as a "shot", just a statement of fact.

Is this the twilight zone?  They are using Accumate, so no, the same thing couldn't be said because it's not the same thing.   ???

Folks .. Joe and Craig are both great guys. They both need to make sure there is accurate information on their products on the forums. Even if we are only "rounding errors" of the total Nscale population.

Lets make sure we stay civil ..

Wait! MT is using Accumates now?! So who's using MTs? ;D

On a serious note, Joe, how about bulk packs of the Z scale couplers? Buying them one pack at a time to change over cars is a bit tedious and costly.

Unless you'll be offering an alternative soon, Craig...

How would something like this work in N scale:

The 100-pack could come with a free eye exam ...   :)

I went to marketing and will process the paperwork to have them provided that way.  We had planned on doing so awhile back but other stuff got in the way.  I'll post the status of this soon.

Thanks for the suggestion!

While you're at it, how about brown roller bearing trucks with low pros in bulk packs... ;D

I'm curious, how hard/easy/costly would it be to have the delrin supplier switch to using a burnt umber or grimy black sort of color, instead of the straight black?   Even if it were shiny, that wouldn't matter too much, since it's easy enough to hit the trucks with a quick shot of Dullcote, which is needed anyways before applying paint/powder.

BTW, Joe -- nice work on the new pre-weathered models:

Thanks...those cars were the reason I didn't make it to the N Scale Show...up to my ears in airbrushes.  Maybe next year.

Actually we can tint them anyway we want to here...anyone who's seen those blinding Green trucks on the Christmas cars can attest.  I've suggested as much and I think if this media surfacing works, we can offer something along those lines.  Regardless...doing more trucks, couplers, wheels and underframes in a grimy color wouldn't cost any more...we just need to know what kind of market that represents.   But good idea...will check into it.

Cheers

Joe
