High Hood GP-35 ?

Has anyone here made a High Hood GP-35 ? I would like to know any details that you would share on the kitbash, since I want to add one or two to my roster. Would you use the SD-35 HH  ?

Thanks for any comments on this.

Before M4D did the high-hoods... I used the Atlas SD35 or GP38 high-hoods to do mine.

The GP35 was tooled in the Atlas Kato days, as a result it has wider than scale hoods compared to the Atlas tooled hoods (GP38, SD35). I plan on using the M4D Hi-nose for Kato to do this:

That being the case, can a SD-35 body (w/ correct width hoods)(Atlas has not corrrected the hood width !) be used on a GP 35 frame ? Are the base bodies the same ?

not w/o surgery, the GP35 is on a "wide" Kato drive, the SD-35 on a "narrow" Atlas drive...

I use the SD35 hood,it drops right on after you remove the low nose. The GP38 nose will do the same thing.

This (SD35/GP38 high nose) will result in a "scale width" short hood, with a "fat" long hood. If that works for you then by all means do it!  8)

I was wondering if the SD-35 and GP-35 LONG hoods were closely similar, and to use the SD-35 Long and short Hhoods for the kitbash !!

Any idea if Atlas plans on retooling the GP35 to correct the fatness? I'm about to start collecting a fleet for my WP layout and had no idea there was this issue. Now I'm squeamish to do so but in the early 70s, GP35s were crawling all over the WP. But I just know as soon as I amass what I need, the man will release a more accurate version.
Failing to prepare is preparing to fail.

Seems unlikely as they just tooled another phase for the (Kato tooled) GP30 (same fat chassis).

Likewise the Kato SD40, SD45, and SD40-2 are fatsos.

Measure the hood width differences, the GP is about 3.5 N SCALE INCHES wider then the SD.If that bothers you I think yuou all need a different hobby.  ;D

I guess I need a different hobby. :D

I never said it "bothered" me, just stating the facts.

I will finish my GP35 up in the next month and then post pix, including a view from the end, alongside one of my SD35s. If ya can't see the difference then, then maybe you need new glasses. ;)

Mark (I love this hobby)

Mark - can the SD-35 LONG and short HHoods be used to kitbash the GP-35, (providing scale width hoods)? Is this where the GP-35 walkway section would be too wide and have a gap ? Is the GP=35 motor itself too wide for the SD-35 long hood kitbash ?

What about using another walkway section, maybe kitbashed from GP-38 ??

I'm just trying to learn from you who have made these ..........

I don't think it would be worth the effort. Provided I don't get tarred and feathered for pointing out the fact that Kato tools up fat hoods, In the next few days will try to get some pix posted so you can see what we're dealing with here. You may arrive at the same conclusion (then again you may not ;)).

You see, it's not so much that the Atlas/Kato tooling is super fat (sticking to the facts, it is wider), but it's just enough such that mating the two is too much for my eye to "not see".

Personally, I am using the MK4D high nose (designed for the Kato locos) to convert my GP35. I have an inventory of Atlas HH shells as well that I use where I think it appropriate (on the GP40 for example).

BTW, are you attempting to model a N&W or SOUTHERN GP35?
