Today  the mailwowan delivered my latest N scale engine, the Bachmann MDT Plymouth diesel engine.
It's my 1st experience with Bachmann.
It is very suited for my micro-layout. It was quite a nice surprise to see that it comes equiped with knuckle couplers ( there is a rapido type coupler included in the box ).

My ( overambitious !!! ) goal would be to kitbash it to build an N scale  Belgian vicinal engine such as this one:

Those things have been staples for years, but the latest revision (the one you have) is surprisingly good. It's a bit over-sized for what it is, but a really nifty unit.

Also a good candidate for lots of detailing too. New horns, a radio antenna, some beacons, etc...

They're also quite economical.  I think you can still get them around $20-25 can't you?

I wouldn't mind having one for future use in some future industrial site...  I wonder if the old shell fits on the new mechanism...

I see that the paint scheme on your improved current version locomotive matches that on the Yellow with black Zebra Stripes GE 44 ton diesel right down to warning signs on the hood side doors. A nice improvement over the railroad names these once came painted in. Nate Goodman (Nato).

Would that thing fit a decoder?

There should be enough room to remove the meat in the cab for a chip, but routing the wires might be a bit of a challenge.  Maybe dremel out some channels.

Yes on the decoder install.
Here's a link to the TCS site showing one done with an M1.
