I've always been a big fan of the Berkshire wheel arrangement.  There are some mighty fine looking 2-8-4s out their, Nickel Plate and MoPac come to mind.  In my mind the P&LE 2-8-4 was perhaps the homeliest.  It has a similar boiler face look to the NYC Niagara.  Anyway, jut putsing on the net while my wife is having a martini night with her friends.

Pretty sure there is a book on those. Here it is:

Strange they were built in 1948, about the same time Erie would think about getting rid of theirs.

Chris,

Speaking of Erie Berkshires and knowing you're a fan, have you seen the Summer 2005 issue of Locomotive Quarterly.  It has a section on Erie Berks.

You can order the back issue here:

I love Locomotive Quarterly.  It's a little pricey but always full of good photos.

Look a the index link I posted.  There are a few issues with Erie steam in them.  I have 5 issues (mostly with D&RGW stuff), many of the photos have not been printed elsewhere.

It is strange, especially since the P&LE didn't want them. They were in the process of dieselization themselves, but for some reason NYC forced the Berks on the P&LE. Maybe someone in Grand Central Terminal got a kickback!

Depends on your perspective! ;) ... and NKP was getting new berks in 1949.

Interesting face on that loco! (yeah, interesting - that's what it is, "interesting")
