this is a good one - i have used thin sheets of packing foam - the kind between plates - it isn't rigid enough to do on teh workbench and then take to the layout - this is much sturdier.

So I was curious how do you handle joints between sections?  Careful use of plaster?

I need to have sections of roadway 30" long or more and worry about the joints created by using pieces less than a foot long.

If you look carefully at many roads, you'll see that there are plenty of joints that occur in nature...  You just have to work them in realistically so it looks like the road has a joint, not the road material...

Why should the road have a joint - I need one
IF you are not using the vernacular definition of "joint" (since you say you need one)  ;D ;D ;D and are referring to roads, concrete roads need expansion joints every 20 feet or so. While most asphalt roads lack expansion joints, they are often cut or dug up for water, sewer, and gas lines, so there is a "joint" where the pipe was laid. They are also often patched, as they tend to develop potholes. There were reputedly "Volkswagen swallowers" on Cicero Ave. in Chicago. I know I hit one once that was a bone jarring experience in a VW Golf.

Isn't that because asphalt never hardens, it remains basically a liquid even after it's applied (like newspaper ink)? Hence, road ruts and those annoying spots that feel like you're driving down a RR track, sans rail and train, which are caused by the repeat bounce effect of car and truck suspensions.
