MTL/Bachmann Wreck Train

Looks like - as I predicted to much criticism on the A-board, that MTL is repackaging the Bachmann crane and crane tender.

The crane is not that bad a model and the tender can be used with some work, but it looks as if MTL decided to just put new trucks on it. They should have added ladders, since it takes "rides too high" to a new level:

I wonder what they had to do to get around the screw-post truck mounts...

Someone should have fixed the handrails on the loco before taking the pic. Also, everything has rust wheels except the crane and tender car. Strange.

At least it looks better than the stupid drawing they have been using.

Someone would've needed to realize the handrails shouldn't look like that to do that. But then again, well, you know...

Well at least the ultra-high riding Bachmann tool/flat will match the MTL cars.

MTL should have taken the oppertunity to tool their own. I would gladly pay $50 for a quality crane in N scale.

Is the Roco crane much better? I only have the Bachmann.

Oh and that tool car (yes I have it) makes MT cars look like low riders. 8)

There have been a number of wrecking Derricks in N Scale, the old Rapido non working one is a pretty accurate model of a 200 ton one. The Bachmann (person) working model also models a 200 ton derrick but it appears to be modeled slightly oversized so is larger than the Rapido. The Roco model sold by various manufactures with or with out the tender (boom flat car) Trix, Con Cor ,AHM, is pretty close to cranes manufactured by American Hoist & Derrick. The Bachmann is nice but their UP scheme in not a real UP MOW one, I have painted several Rapido cranes into different era UP schemes ,have several of the Roco ones in various road names ,incorrect Red GN, correct steam era SP black, Orange Amquack (Trak) and one I painted in Silver as a former MP car now in UP service that was based in Salt Lake for awhile. Now to everyone's pet peve DA BOOM BOX KAR. Not only is it on stilts, but it seemes to me to be visually over size. I was suprized that Bachmann had used Arch Bar Trucks under it. The roads in my area Out West SP,UP,Rio Grande never had boom cars with a box car body or caboose body (old Lionel DLW Car) on end, but used either cut down heavyweight passenger cars with six wheel trucks, or flat cars, sometimes with tool bins added. The best Derrick model was the Demi Trains kit ,not easy to build in working condition. Just plain black as it came with open sides it resembled Western Pathetic (Pacific) 150 ton Unit. Notice I have mostly used the word Derrick, that what most railroads referred to them as I even have a UP MOW Green ex baggage car that reads DERRICK SERVICE on the side like the prototype. Of course ever since I was a kid and had a Lionel and later an Athearn HO CRANE thats what I tended to call em.  Nate Goodman (Nato).

The derrick is a good model, especially in light of no one else offering this type.  While I don't know what issue it was, Model Railroader, many years ago, had a great article on building various sizes of derricks from the HO scale Athearn model, and it makes me wish I knew what issue it was since the same could be used to kitbash the Bachmann model.

And there have been articles on converting it to diesel as well... another option most fairly modern modelers really need to look at.

"The Roco model sold by various manufactures with or with out the tender (boom flat car) Trix, Con Cor ,AHM, is pretty close to cranes manufactured by American Hoist & Derrick."

Nate... thanks for mentioning the Roco model.  While it is missing some important details (such as the counter weight that typically is found on the opposite end of the boom) it, too, is a useful model, one that might ought to be considered for a kitbash.

As for the Rapido derrick... are they fairly easy to find on the 'bay?  I wouldn't mind doing a kitbash of this one if I could fine one...

I've got a couple of Botchman and Dimi wreck cranes  (as they were referred to back east)?  Although CNJ called them 'relief trains'.

CNJ had a few steam 150T with varying cable arrangements, LV & RDG had 250T with diesel and offset/cranked booms...

Part of a long standing list of partially researched/modeled toys.

it takes "rides too high" to a new level

Even this prototype isn't high enough for an MT model:

Derrick on the N&W:

Trivia: some of N&W's remained steam powered into the early 1970s ...

I picked up a Bachmann crane at MBK and will be "dieselizing" it.

I also found a new underframe for the tool car and sanded down the wood siding, though I am not 100% sure I want to continue with that project...

Mine is still in the box waiting for me to have free time, so I haven't really had time to mess with it other than to note the Gabriel HiJacker suspension - what underframe are you referring to?
