Model Conrail in 1993 and have a fair number of NS run-through locomotives (plus CSX, etc)

or

Model NS today and have a fair number of CR patch jobs...


Take into account conspicuity striping, availability of particular models or likely future availability. Also rolling stock. 1993 means goodbye Athearn Ethanol tanks, Kato Maxi-IV's, etc...  It means hello more colorful shortline boxcars though.

I am getting second thoughts about going whole hog over NS, given that Atlas will certainly have the whole C40-8* family out there relatively soon, which I've been begging for the past 15 or so years.

Model UP in the early 80s - mid 90s, with all the roads they bought in that period you could have as many patch jobs as you liked!  ;D

Conrail in 1998 has the best of all worlds... Maxi IV, some Ethonol cars, lots of diferent boxcar schemes.

From what I recall, most of the paint outs were gone by 87/88, either by way of the paint shop or scrapper.

Actually 1993 Conrail would be very do-able. With the SD50/60/60M and the B40-8. now the C40-8 and GP38-2. Might have to think on getting some newer power.

Plus the GP15 is coming!

About the only thing missing is the SD50 with the can openers (always wondered why Atlas never did that) and of course the SD40-2's in Conrail equipment.

Also missing are the oddball six axle GE's, but at least there is hope there with the Kato C30-7 frame around.

Looking very interesting...

And the B23-7 in the Q scheme too. Can the C40-8W be far behind?

And I always liked when a CSX bright future scheme would show up on the Portland Coal Train..
