Figure I'd better post this afore I'm accused of "being out of street cars." The North Shore is to streetcars as the Porsche Boxter is to the VW "bug". Still taken in June 1959.

A Chicago-bound local has pulled out of the Milwaukee terminal and is crossing the Milwaukee Road yards.

Train prepares to depart Milwaukee. Note the billboard atop the station adverising "38 Trains Daily to Chicago".  Expresses made the 85 miles in 90 minutes, including street running in Milwaukee and elevated running in Chicago.

This is the Chicago Terminal, at Roosevelt Road on the elevated system. Note the one-man tower.

This is the last North Shore photo. A three car train leaves the Milwaukee street running for some high speed running. Streetcar employees didn't dress like the North Shore employee in this photo!

Next week, under trolley wire on the Chicago Transit Authority.

Marion, OH before AC tower was moved south of the tracks to be part of the museum.  Still a great place to watch trains.

Taken shortly before they quit running down 19th Street in Erie, PA

As alluded to in my 21st Century steam thread

http://therailwire.net/smf/index.php?topic=15259.0

Here are some images of the amazing 2-foot gauge Coal India railway in Tipong, Assam (you have to drive along a section of the famous 'Stillwell Road' to get there).

When I visited In January 1979 the railway had at least 7 active locos, 4 small 0-4-0STs built by WB Bagnall of Staffordshire, England, and 3 ex Darjeeling Railway 'B' class 0-4-0STs. There was at least one other B class and several more Bagnalls that saw use on the railway -but apart form one 'stuffed and mounted' Bagnall, none of these others were seen.

Today the railway clings to life, but only 3 locos remain and usually only two are required in use. All three are over 80 years old.

Cheers, Wes

I finally found the rest of my old RR pics I took back when I was 13-14 years old around 1979-80.
Bear with me on the quality, as they were taken with an old Kodak pocket cam, & the images are
digital pics of the original prints, since I don't have a scanner. (some are of that old satin finish,
hence the "snow" reflection on some.)

This is the old B&O freight house here in Massillon Ohio, taken in October of 1979. Sadly, it was torn down some 20-25 years ago. The Ford stake bed is a Chessie System truck.

Another view further back taken from the bridge south of the freight house looking north in the spring
of 1980. Trackage from L-R: Chessie System ex B&O (now RJ Corman/Ohio Central; N&W ex NKP ex WLE
Dalton Branch (now abandoned & mostly a walking path); CR ex PC ex PRR Chicago-Pittsburgh main.

Another view of the freight house looking southwest from the bridge to the north:

More to come next week....

Nice Donkey! I'm still hoping to find the pix I took with a crappy camera as kid in the late 1960s early 1970s (still have unpacked boxes to go through ...  ::))
