uhm, I fathom that when I peel a Digitrax decoder out off its condom to get it into tight places, I can kiss the warranty good bye?
Is that true?

Test it first. Then cut and install. Once you cut the wires the warranty is gone anyway.
If you fry it, they'll install a new condom for free after paying for repairs

Warranty is not void if you cut the wires. If you remove the condom yes, as it is a "protection" to the decoder, and removing it would void said warranty. If you cut the wires and install the decoder per instructions, and something happens because of a manufacturing defect, it is still covered.

However most wired ones are via a harness....so they wouldn't know if you cut em!

Sort of depends on what scale you work in. I can't think of a single decoder out there that's listed as "N" or "Z" scale that has wires that also has a harness. OTOH, in HO many do indeed come with the JST connector on the decoder and then a harness that goes JST to bare wires.

Digitrax has always had the "once the wires are altered" clause. Just about all of my decoders have only wires. Can only think of one I ever bought with a plug on the end.

Sent a DZ143 and $17 check in for repairs couple of years ago. I included a note explaining how I cooked it in the basement while my wife was cooking the Thanksgiving turkey in the kitchen.
Got the repaired decoder and the check by return mail. Guess they were amused.

Where is the Digitrax "cut the wires clause"? I can not find it on the website or on any of my documentation here.

Seems kinda lame they have that....why not design the decoder so that any lack of resistance or increased draw with 1mm leads would be ok to the decoder in case the customer wants to cut them.  I always shorten my leads, and I'm sure a majority of us out there do!

Ian,
You are right. Digitrax has apparently eased up on the wording in their warranty. Former versions of the decoder manual stipulated that they would not be responsible for any claims after the installation of the decoder was "started". Shortening the wires on a wired decoder effectively voided the warranty. I have several versions of decoder manuals from the past twelve years. The wording changed a little in each version
Cutting the shrink wrap off would most definitely void the warranty. Even tough they'd have to cut it off to inspect or make repairs.

I've sent back close to a dozen decoders, all with clipped wires, and including some that I removed the red sleeve from.  Most without "proof of purchase."  Always replaced with no questions asked.  I even sent back a DZ-121 that laid in my junk box for about 2 years, and received a 123 as a replacement.

There's two more on the way back to surgery as we speak.  I'll let you know the outcome...

I'm looking forward to getting into DCC so I too can start sending decoders back! ;)

(this decoder will probably find applications in my fleet whenever I get to the DCC point)

Installed the 125 in a LL GP60 - the smaller size allowed for very little frame mod - works great - nice loco too!

The Digitrax website states that the DZ125 is Soundbug compatible. Does anyone know what this means exactly?
