Hello all.  Jim Hale here.  Yet another SPF.  Currently am modeling south-central Pennsylvania during the transition era.  Like the terrain, and like what the PRR did with their motive power.  Will post some photos when I figure out how to.
Am another refugee from the Atlas forum, and was greatly inspired by the efforts of those forumers.
65 years old, and an experienced  modeler, although I don't consider myself an expert compared to others who have posted here.
Partially finished an N scale 4 by 5 foot "spaghetti" layout about 30 years ago.  Stopped when I realized that the code 80 rail was somewhat less than realistic, and the locomotives available then did not run very well, to be polite.
Current N scale layout is 16 by 16 feet, Atlas code 55, 100% DCC, MRC Prodigy Express.  Am very pleased with the results so far...

Hey everybody!

Used to post a bunch of few years ago when I modeled C&NW pre and post merger. SN was "CNWlivesinme". Used to be an apprentice at the Golden Gate Model Railroad Museum before i went back to college in Portland, Oregon. I am proud to say I briefly worked for a summer at the Feather River Train shop with none other than the legend himself, Chuck "chulvis" Ciaccio, as my boss. Soon he will be my pusher man once again.

Well, after getting out of the hobby entirely and finding the wonderful world of alcohol and women of ill-repute, I am more settled with a solid chunk of real estate (by my standards) in my room, and have a more narrowed era. Getting back into N-scale hoping to model 1976-1981 D&RGW in Colorado. Hoping to start with a simple loop 4' x 6.5'  with a >14' radius, layout this summer. I have built a layout in the past, but the curves were far too tight.

Starting with less is more and simple trackwork. Probably code 55, using freight with all metal low pro wheelsets, body-mounted couplers, and lots of weathering.

Looking forward to getting to know all the a$$-hats again!

Hello gang,
I just joined, or re-joined as the case may be. Looks like a fun forum and a lot of talented guys some of whom I know from other sites and elsewhere.

I've been in N scale since the dark days, modeling Cajon Pass "circa 1950", with focus on ATSF and UP operations on the west side of the pass between San Bernardino and Summit. Of course my good friend Circa gives me the freedom to waver a bit in both calendar directions and so of course I own the '56 El Cap and Cola sets and some pre-WWII era stuff that should rightly have been taken to the local salvage yard but somehow found refuge on my layout...

Looking forward to some good info and good natured interchange; at least on the surface, this  group doesn't seem to take itself too seriously. I certainly hope I don't...
Regards, Otto K.

Good evening all,

I'm new to this forum, as I was a former "Atlas" N forum member. I'm 49 years old, live in the heart of the PRR territory (southeastern PA) and am a mere 20 minutes from the Strasburg Railroad. I've been an active N scale modeler since 1986 (my second round with N, my first when I was a pre-teen). All that said, I model the Southern Pacific in April of 1953. The locale being the area between San Luis Obispo and Santa Margarita, CA. It is the Santa Margarita Sub. of SP's "Coast Division". While there is not a current layout, the "actors" and supporting "cast" have been researched and acquired. When acquired, they have been modified where necessary to match the prototype. I look forward to sharing, learning and being inspired by those who share this forum. Thanks! Mike  :)

Good morning, friends,.  As you can tell from the user name, I've come over to N Scale after a number of years exclusively with Large Scale (G) garden railroading.  I still have that running but, with a small backyard and excruciating heat, I don't run it as often as I'd like.  After surveying the hobby, I decided on N scale due to its size (more layout opportunities in a given area) and the very high quality and variety of the products available from a huge number of manufacturers.

I'm working on designing my first layout (4 x 8 plywood, natch). Something simple, just to play around with switches and learn about electrical issues, then I'll move into a more permanent layout.

I'm using Kato Unitrack because, as I approach the ripe old age of 58, I don't want to invest years in learning how to lay roadbed and flextrack.  Since I live in Maryland, I'm thinking about a layout loosely patterned after the old Western Maryland road.

I look forward to meeting you here and learning from you.

John

Mike & John,
Welcome to our version of the Wire!    Hopefully you will find a lot of good stuff here.  We do specialize in a tad bit o' ribald humor, and our criticism, while blunt, is only matched by our willingness to dive in and help you get it done.

John,
You didn't mention where in MD you hail from, but we have LOT of DMV denizens around here, who would be happy to welcome you to our places, and show you how to do all sorts of stuff - track work included.

Friends -- thanks for the hearty welcome.  I live in Annapolis and, when not otherwise engaged, I do a little home-brewing, so I'd be happy to help fuel the ribald humor when meeting the DMV crowd.

You won't last long here if you do - none of us is known for "behaving" . . . .

But welcome.  Hope you find some inspiration, a little help when needed, and a ton of friendship.
