Tom,

Here's a few photos that show some weathering.  Don't forget that the weathering is not just shades of black or gray.  You have light, almost white color from sand as well as dirt on the lower sides and running gear.  Also, there are water streaks seen on the boiler as well as rust and water streaks on the tender.

Ball-breakers, hernia creators, and other sobriquets not permitted on a family forum! Everything weighed a ton and broke down every 100 miles or so.  ;D ;D ;D

That's part of the fascination with steam - designers could take a teakettle over an open fire and wrest 6500 horsepower out of it (PRR Q2).  8) :o

Jim mentions that he follows a weathering article of some ancient magazine:

I always refer to Kelley Morris' classic article in the January/February 1980 issue of the "Gazette", and generally follow the same procedures with a few variations. I use Floquil paint for this work but with a base weathering colour of 60% Grimy Black and 40% Engine Black. And instead of Foundation, I use Freight Car Brown to spray around the drivers. I also augment the painted weathering with Bragdon chalks as a final touch. D&RGW #488 running light, arrives at Sapinero...

Do you know how/where one could find that issue?  No email for Jim on his site. :(

Thanks Robert - I'll order from them tomorrow.

I'm just having a problem matching the paints at this point.  I can see the brown in there, but need the secret formula. ;D

Ok, after a few more hours:



I used neolube on the smokebox, rods, and stack to get back that graphite look back.  I was trying to get a 'water stain' effect around the second dome, but am not sure a water stain would even be there.

What is that little pot with lid behind the coal used for?  For cooking crabs? ;)

Tom, the "little pot with the lid" on the tender deck is the water hatch! The tank spout is stuck in it and turned on. Yes, there would be lime stains around the whistle and pop valves on the steam dome. Look very good, BTW. Same should be around valves adjoining the top cylinder of the air compressor.

...and when do you replace the smokestack then ?
(if you burn wood you need another chimney...)
