Not a very detailed photo, but this old Erie facility is a few miles from me. Looks like this from the engine house roof:

If you go up on one of the sand towers you see this:

NS uses the area now to service work vehicles.

Don't know if this is what you are looking for...

From NS's Spencer Yard, Linwood, NC.

From CSX's Yard in Hamlet, NC

A small remote depot: Hawk Junction, ON. (160 miles north of Sault Ste. Marie). The engine facility consists of a 3 track shed, a single sand tower and fuel stand. The fuel tanks and tank car unloading spur are off to the right out of the image.

Old sand and fuel facility at the enginehouse in Sault Ste. Marie:

The sand towers here were replaced by a WC style tower using a small 70-ton covered hopper over the tracks as the sand bunker.

cv_acr: That last photo is a keeper for model consideration!

Lee: any more pics of the sand tower?

Thanks all, and keep them coming.

I have a "Railway Age" article published in the late 40s showing the newly constructed diesel facilities at Harrisburg. Runs about 8 pages. Includes dimensional data on the buildings. Also have the valuation maps for the area.

The sand tower is at the CSX Riverside Yard in Body More.  Sorry, I don't have much on file with just the tower.

Needless to say, I was shooting like a madman at the main subject being it was 1992 and she was still in her birthday suit... Albeit with badly placed pasties... :P

Those Linwood photos have a lot of creepy colored power in the line.  How about the real Linwood at it's twilight in NS 1985

Here's where we fueled, inspections, wash & had light service at Queen St. in Alexandria VA before hitting the weedline.  Just outside of Pot Yard.  Across the street was the old roundhouse which was being used as a lumber yard in later years as the facility was down sized, and alas steam was long gone.  Now it's all gone.

This was a state of the art at the time built for unit coal train.  Muscle Shoals Alabama.  Enroute fueling on a power-electic Tenn.
I think its a great photo to get a feel for fuel/sanding/light service.
You also can get a good view of how SOU ran the radio control car for helper mid train units.

I think this is a important RR structure that needs a update.  Its not been a hard kitbash with the Heljan or Stewart pieces but it would be a nice addition to a popular structure often modeled.
Maybe these can offer something of the different lubricant, fuel, water lines.  The red line is the diesel and then you have water, lube.... I'm not sure about sand I think its on the other side.  Maybe someone knows about this.
I never noticed but there is a lack of the big sand towers at a lot of the diesel fuel facilites on SOU compared to what I see on other roads. In fact I don't remember many at all at our facilities.  Maybe I just don't remember.
This is Valdosta Georgia. I'm not even sure if there is sanding here but I think so.
Are the sanding towers using gravitiy instead of vacum or pressure to dispense sand into the locos?  Are they hold over from Steam?  Or does it have something to do with the grade of the sand?
