I don't have a scanner) a "beetle brow" in it's glory I took in January of 1981 on the old
CL&W sub of the Chessie System thru town here. (they used to leave a loco idle here
occ.) I was 15 & using a Kodak Pocket Camera-yikes!

Of all the train pictures I've taken over the years, this is easily my favorite.  Taken in 1987 or 88 at Penn Mary down by the late lamented General Motors plant in Baltimore.  Pretty rare to find a matched set like this by the late 80's.


Using old Atlas/Rocos repowered with Kato motors by JnJ, I had them on my old Laurel Valley layout.  I ended up selling them at a Timonium show when I thought I'd be modeling Conrail.

The GP30 is probably one of my favorite GPs. Even though I grew up with the 38s, 40s and their -2 brethren, I just love "the brow".

That's probably why I have two of them, even though they were rather sparse (but still around) on CR by 85. I should probably snag a GP35 too, but they just don't do it the same way the 30s do.

One night when I was in high school, probably 81 or 82 (I started driving in 81) we were coming home from the BSME and ended up in Woodberry behind the London Fog plant.  A coal drag had been backed up the NC, and had a Reading GP-30 paint out on the point.  It was too cool.

I think they are so popular because even a novice railfan can identify the hump backed, big brow and announce with confidence "there goes a GP30"

LOL! Jeff, that pic does it to me too (also, when's the last time you saw
a Virginia Slims billboard?) being out of the hobby since about that
time really makes one notice all the changes in RRs. I started doing the
same crazy things as u, except I tortured my friends with Bluegrass
music. Oh well, I miss my '73 Duster too, & my 70' Coronet (oh wait,
I still have that one!) But I think that one will be going up for sale this
summer.

So do they fill the fuel tanks with concrete as well?  Or can they be rigged to serve as a "fuel tender" for its fully functional mate?
