A note on mixing Micro Set and craft paints...

They don't like each other very much. The Micro Set tends to really soften up craft paint, making it easily removable with a hobby knife. This can be either very good, or very bad, depending upon if you know this or not and what you're trying to achieve...

Sean,

Did you thin with water and airbrush the craft paint?  I have had good luck thinning those thick paints with Future and/or acrylic medium.  Seems to "harden" the paint for good decal results...

Yeah, thats what I did. Next time I'll use Future instead of distilled water. Although this time I thankfully didn't get burned, I needed to pull off a bit of the craft paint and ended up with a few random scratches on the car that hopefully can be exploited with washes.

Sounds like you have some nice "pre-weathering" going on.  Another good product to use for thinning acrylics is some stuff called "Airbrush Medium".  I use the Liquitex brand, which is sold at Michael's and Hobby Lobby.

This happened with my challenge car. I sprayed it with a light grey mix, which I then wanted to apply decals to, but noticed the MicroSet softened the paint to the point where it could be scraped away.

Does airbrush medium give the paint any different properties than thinning with future or distilled water?

It works similar to Future - it's an acrylic fluid, with "flow agents" - whatever that is!  I usually have great luck with it.  Here's the specs:
