BNSF sheet Steel Cars

I'm guessing that is what these cars behind the fence on Mormon Island are used to transport, but I haven't been able to come up with better photos.

I thought I remember seeing something similar discussed here in either a 3D printing thread or a prototype wish list thread ( @GaryHinshaw come back)?

Anyone know any 411 about these?

3d models - sorry don't recall.

Try looking for BNSF 568000 - 568209, built 2001 by Johnstown America at the usual sites. You may also consider looking for 'slab car' or variants thereof.

I'm guessing those are specialized steel slab haulers. They look like the ones I've seen on the Union in similar service.

Did that. Searched the Google for over an hour last night with no hits. The number series isn't listed on Railroad Pictures Archives either.

Not sure on the prototype and I haven't seen one in the flesh, but BaldyloxDesigns has one up on their etsy page:

Slab cars, as James mentioned, Baldylox has a 3D one, but the issue is how to hide weight in them. Mike who had them commissioned, was trying to work with Peter at NSK and Brett at Baldylox to do a "hybrid" car, were Brett would design a shell that fit over a sill that NSK made that would hold trucks/couplers.

When I talked to him a few weekends ago, it doesn't seem like there has been much progress on that

Given the size of the center sill, I'd think it would be fairly straightforward to do something to add weight - here's a render showing all the laser cut brass of an 89' AMF built flatcar. The center sill weight fits in perfectly. Having glanced at the Etsy page, I'd probably approach this one from the bottom.

Last week I gave up and requested from PayPal a refund on my July NSK order, having heard nothing for months despite repeated attempts at contacting him. Perhaps he'll have more success at communicating than I did.

When I lived in Anaheim & used to foam with my friends at Fullerton station we used to see these slab cars on a late night run on the BNSF slab train on Saturday nights. Train started in Long Beach and ended its run at the rolling mill in Fontana, Ca. Before these cars were built the slabs of steel were placed on bulkhead flat cars. This was problem some as the slabs would vibrate and start swinging off of the cars. The train would have to stopped till a heavy equipment vehicle could be dispatched to right the slab back in place on the car. Then BNSF designed these specialized ribbed cars to correct that problem.
