Also keep in mind trees aren't all the same age. A cluster of trees should have a gradient from the larger older trees in the middle down to saplings around the edges, with everything in-between.

And the trees within the right of way should be smaller only lasting until the ROW or  sightlines need to be cleared.
The Railwire is not your personal army.

Yes, so few forests are old in proximity to tracks, past clearing, disturbance and fire are all issues.

For my layout, I'm targeting 3.5-4" as the tallest trees, so about 40'.  This is generous in my prototype and avoids the trees overwhelming the backdrop.  When 9000' mountains are 14" on the backdrop, the trees can't be 7".

BTW, does anyone know of a good color chart for the Scenic Express turfs?  The online colors are not very helpful.  Looking for a realistic conifer color and their conifer green is too dark.

Agreed.  I have a bag of it but prefer their Hazy Green or Forest Green.

That looks great but much lighter than my Forest Green from them.  What are you using for base paint?

Probably slightly washed out by natural light coming from the window behind me.
Gray automotive primer.
This is closer.

Those conifers look really great - how do you make them?

Thank you.
I do it a couple of different ways to provide some variety in specie and height.
Sharpened dowels with spread out furnace filter and twisted wire with Sisal rope fibers.
The dowels and filter can be made quite a bit taller with relative ease when compared to the twisted wire and Sisal fiber.

The ability to make much smaller, younger trees is an advantage of the twisted wire and rope fiber method.
