I mean, if people like solid nose doors, molded on grabs, etc... well, hooray for a robust marketplace, eh?

I'd rather run my Katos at a show over my ScaleTrains, least I know if little hands touch them, they wont get the details broken off.

I have yet to sell any of my Katos that my ST's replaced as they are smooth runners just the same. I just don't mix and match them.

But yes, its nice to have options that are worth the money either way.
Attempting to model a modern Southern Pacific based in 2015/2016...

Also, I have a passenger train addiction...

I love my Katos, but Scale Trains run smoother IME.

But wait until you convert them to LokPilot.  :)  The one Kato I've converted so far is the best runner I have now.  I also think Kato's basic tooling is crisper than ST's, and they can be detailed.

But the Scale Trains models are great too.  We have an embarrassment of riches in this market.
