Weekend Update 8/6/23

Had a bit of a speed bump earlier in the year (guys get a PSA test), but all good now, so back to doing what is fun.
 
My wife Laura has been away for a while helping her elderly parents, so I've started to put together a few things in our dining room.
Once the weather warms up a little (winter here in NZ), this will be moved into the garage.  This is the NJ route 10 crossing of the Morristown & Erie in Whippany.   Still lots to do, but at least I can start to make some progress.

I came across this prototype photo of some cable spools loaded on a flatcar and thought it'd be something fun to model. I drew up some spools and printed them off on my Mono X with Siraya Tech "build" resin. 4 of them fills up an Intermountain flat nicely.  I have some 1mm silicon tubing on the way that I hope looks good when wrapped on the spools.

I model way too early for graffiti and I’m not big on N Scale whimsy but this one is subtle and this Rutland car was just begging to be tagged.

I like it - because it looks era-appropriate for the car, but it's really a serious anachronism.  Very clever!

Crack that whip!

One of these days I'll actually take a picture of something to show the before...before I do it. Currently I'm building a new workshop/garage for all of the trains and modules to go into. Painted the inside this weekend so now all that remains before I can start thinking about moving in is the garage door (kind of important but I'm waiting on a guy to do it). Then it's siding, exterior paint, and it will be done!

I was able to attend the train show in Evanston Wy that is held in the roundhouse and machine shop that the city purchased and restored. It was a good 'break' from life even though I was still writing papers for school. One thing I love about the location is the lighting, it just adds so much to the models.



I had a hitchhiker run around the loop for a little bit. That was a sound unit and it didn't mind the diesel noise turning on and off as it moved down the tracks.



In addition to restoring the building, they are also restoring an 0-6-0 to operable status.







Since Evanston is an hour and a half drive from my house, I ended up camping in one of my favorite places for the weekend as well.



This was our clubs largest layout to date that took 18 minutes to complete a full circuit.

Looking great!  I drive over this crossing at least once a week and it's definitely recognizable.  If you want an excuse to own an FL9, there's one in primer right up to the road at the end of the siding...

Long time in coming (mostly because I spaced out the work  schedule) but the 2nd phase modification is done.




Started with the stock LL/Walthers body (the CC one is a little crude). My first attempt at this was a loco that had the topside gingerbread removed, but the sides and windows still original. Found this out after I'd painted and decaled it. Thought I'd have a foobie but I found this:



Most of the roof clutter is gone, the new radiators are on, but the sides still are as built (and painted). More research turned up the fact that tho this loco eventually got new sides, #450 only had the roof remake and nothing else till it was scrapped. All I had to do was apply a new number to the foobie.

Hard part done? HAH! I wish. Now I have to add the mass of stripes the NH had on these paint schemes. Oh, the horror ...
