truck disassembly: how do I remove the sideframes?

...specifically, for the older Atlas C-628.  I am trying my hand at weathering for the first time. I don't see any obvious latches to separate the side frame from the gear/wheelset assembly. Spreading them apart seems like I would either break them, or compromise the ability to put everything back together correctly.  What am I missing?

Same issue with a Bachmann SD45, where I wanted to check for and clean out any excess grease in the gear assembly. Never got that one apart but would still like to do that.

Disclaimer: Yes, I've been in N scale for over 50 years, and ought to know how to do this. No, I have never intentionally weathered any of my equipment before. My Dad "ruined" his 1930's Lionel standard gauge equipment when he painted them as a teenager. He drummed it into me that all of my trains should remain pristine forever...     8)

Thanks in advance!

On the Alcos, there are snap tabs on the ends of the trucks. So you carefully spread the ends of the sideframe box, mindful you will need to catch the axle pickups.

Somebody else will have to help you with the Bachmanns.

They come apart like this.

Thanks Mike - I got them apart and am continuing with the project.

SD45, that is some pretty slick crane work right there. In the left side of the photo, you can see the operator picked up a cardboard box with the axle / bearing pocket of the frame!
