SP 171208 and MSD decal set #628

Questions for SP modelers/fans:

Micro-Scales set #228 includes a large graffiti decal specifically for SP 171208, which the set claims is a 50 ft single door boxcar.  The drawing (no photos) shows a single door, but also has door tracks for a second door opening to the left.  There is no room for a second door unless the drawing is partially on the door, which I doubt, as this is a late 60s/early 70s artwork.

The only car close to this number I've been able to find online is SP 171242, a double door car, with plug and sliding doors.  The art could have been drawn over a plug door with little difficulty, so that is possible.

Question 1:  Do any of you have a photo of SP 171208, with or without graffiti, but preferable in the late 60s or early 70s?

Question 2:  If not, was it in the same class as 171242?  Most roads tried to group cars in 50s or 100s, but not all did that, and I'm not familiar with the SP.

Question 3:  If it wasn't in the same class, and you don't have a picture, can you confirm the basic door arrangement and, hopefully, 1974 paint scheme?

I have a model made from a single door car, as the MSD instructions call for, but since the also don't say anything about the lettering on the car, I used the older round herald scheme.  The photo online has the newer billboard "Southern Pacific", so if I do it over, it might as well be right.

Thank you.

Hi, I also have this same Microscale decal sheet and was looking more into it.  I was never able to find the photo they referenced. However, I did learn some more about the class of SP boxcars.
The B-50-30 class was renumbered in 1956. SP 109100-110099 series (re#'d  SP 170492-171489 in 1956)
This boxcar was only 2 numbers away and I think this is the one Microscale referenced.

It was from this page:

More details about modeling those SP 50' boxcars here:

There was a Proto2000 model (now Walthers) that is good for the earlier B-50-20 class (but not the one we're interested in).
The Athearn is an ok stand-in if you can tolerate it. There is also a Branchline model, but it would need some work as Tony Thompson mentions on his blog.
If you ever do find the original referenced photo, I'd like to see it.
Thanks,
Rob R.

Interesting.  It looks like either the SP had multiple car types in the same series, or some very small groups lumped together.
